The writers can't please everyone. Did you know that?
So when Glee secrets that bother me make their way onto my dash I tend to blog about them. There have been quite a few anti-Kurtofsky today. It isn't even my OTP and I get frustrated with the arguments in these secrets. Here's the basic problem. The set up of the argument.
"I'm really glad for Karofsky that he's getting redeemed but redemption does not equal love interest." My first question is who said it did? Shipping Kurtofsky for me has nothing to do with Dave's redemption, though it is a necessary part of it because without it there is no healthy relationship. Despite popular belief Kurtofsky shippers have no interest in putting Kurt in an harmful relationship so therefore redemption is necessary.
But I don't find Kurtofsky interesting because Dave needs to be redeemed. I find it interesting because I find Dave Karofsky's character interesting. I find Kurt interesting. I like to imagine what sort of dynamic they might have as a couple. I like to imagine what they might teach their kids about bullying, I like to imagine what Dave's first date with Kurt would be like, or what Burt would think about it all. Normal shipy stuff like that. It makes for great stories and yes it all can be done in a healthy way because people can and do change. I've said it before. If people can forgive and have healthy friendships with their nazi tormentors they can have a healthy romance with their high school bully. You should just accept that as a fact. You might not and no one is saying that you have too, but don't deny others their right to do it either.
Arguing 'well I don't think Kurtofsky should be canon because Kurt doesn't need to love Dave for him to be redeemed' makes no sense to me. It's like seeing a Glee secret that says Klaine shouldn't happen because strong friendship doesn't have to equal love. Well okay.... yeah it doesn't but what does that have to do with whether the writers should or shouldn't take it further? Can two friends fall in love? Yes they can and they do. Can someone fall in love with someone who once bullied them? Yes they can and they do. Could the writers go either route? Yes they could. So what point are you making pointing out that it doesn't have to become a romance? We're well aware that it doesn't but you haven't said yet why it shouldn't.
So then people go further to add that seeing Kurt and Dave in a romance would make them really uncomfortable. Okay. What do you want me to do for you? I can give you hugs. I can sympathize. But unless you want to express that something is definitely wrong and or damaging about the pairing I don't know what you want everyone to do about it. Your argument basicly boils down to this. "I don't want those two to get together because they don't have to and if they did I wouldn't like it."
See the title of this post? That's all the rebuttal this sort of argument needs. If you got up in the middle of a debate and said something like this you'd be laughed off the stand. Why? Because what does or doesn't make you comfortable kind of means nothing when you are just one of thousands.Thousands of people, each with different ideas about what should or shouldn't happen and not everyone is going to be pleased and yes some will be disappointed in the end. The rest of us just learn to deal with that.
But you by posting secrets and going on tags and what not are actively campaigning against a ship and fine, that's your right. Freedom of speech and all that. But that's why you need facts. That's why you need evidence. Either prove that Kurtofsky would be extremely damaging to the viewer and irresponsible for the writers to push, or don't bother speaking out against it because in the grand scheme of things why should we care about what does or doesn't make you comfortable? If that sounds harsh I'm sorry but I don't know how to gentle it.
What if I sent the writers a letter describing a horrible relationship in my life and ended it with "Klaine makes me uncomfortable. I'm just so scared for Kurt. Blaine didn't fall for Kurt right away and that was the way it was for me and so and it turned out he just didn't really love me like he thought he did. It was really hurtful and a big mess and I just think mutual love from the beginning is better."
It would be absurd for RIB to then ditch Klaine because that one woman in Chicago found it triggery and it made her uncomfortable. I don't know the exact number of people who have to be uncomfortable with something for a writer to take note. There a far far too many people who think homosexuality is wrong and are very vocal about it after all. Numbers don't a truth make. What I do know is that if something is legitimately wrong and the people can express that and prove it, then of course, I'd hope that the writers would heed us. Otherwise I'm sorry it makes you uncomfortable and here's a hug but.... the writers will do what the writers will do and you either accept that or you know, stop watching.
