Captain of the Guard Mars did not like to be summoned at random.
“The king wants to see you, Captain” was how Deputy Guard Sacks woke him up that morning, certainly before he’d broken his fast, definitely before he’d even relieved his bladder.
“Wonderful,” Kieth said, blinking in the cold, weak sunlight of morning.
“I’ll uh,” Sacks continued. “I’ll give you a moment to get dressed.”
Kieth groaned into a sitting position. “That would be nice,” he agreed.
They walked down the stone hallways at a quick clip.
“Any idea what this is about?” Kieth asked, sword at his hip. There was nothing particular on his radar; the usual movings of city villians and wandering bandits in the foothills, but nothing he didn’t feel like he had a good handle on. Certainly he couldn’t think of a single god damn thing that would get to his king’s ears before it had reached his own, not after five solid years on the job. That’s four and a half more years than any of his eight most recent predecessors, according to records.
Sacks made a strange noise.
“Sacks?”
“Well,” the deputy started, darting a glance. “There was a fight.”
A deep sense of familiar foreboding settled in Keith’s gut. “A fight?”
“With the prince.”
“Oh jeez.”
“Another one, I guess.”
Keith picked up his pace. “And let me guess – it didn’t go well.”
“It did not.”
Keith glowered at the door rapidly approaching them.
“I’m not going to like this meeting, am I,” Keith mused, and Sacks motioned for the guards to open the double doors to the king’s private chambers.
“Probably not,” he agreed.
