Have you ever made a headcanon for one character, and then realized that was a bit too similar to another headcanon you made? If so, what do you usually do to make them different?
I have quite a few vocalsynth headcanons, and the fear of accidentally making them act too similar to eachother or characters in media that I like is the biggest thing keeping me from actually doing something with them.
Not really? Well- not that it never happens, I just don't really care when it happens UIHNKJFDS
When working with a large cast of characters (which, Vsynth stuff inevitably end up being) it's kinda of a fool's errand to try and make Every single character completely and totally unique from each other, character traits are gonna be repeated, that's just a fact of life; The thing you can do to make them unique and their own character is to add texture to the base personality traits.
Ritsu and Miko are both traumatized people who's main trauma response is anger, and main reaction to being triggered is violence; but Ritsu acts self-important and above it all as a facade and is incredibly insecure, and Miko's trying her damnedest to be sweet and demure despite being extremely irritated 80% of the time.
Yowa and Tei are both "landmine" (Jirai) girls, mentally ill people who are extremely self destructive, and who can be extremely volatile at times, and are extremely paranoid; but Yowa's paranoia manifests into her stalking her bullies from high school to make sure they're not secretly coming after her, and she refuses to really see herself in the wrong, meanwhile Tei's paranoia leads her to constantly hurt herself because she's terrified of hurting people close to her, to the point she winds up pushing them away because she cares Too much, and to constantly see herself as the wrong-doer in the situation.
Rook and Yuki (my UTAU) are both aloof guys who tend to be really quiet and who both experienced parental neglect; but Rook's extremely self-conscious and constantly being pulled down by his depression, and a very hard worker to try and quash the constant feeling he's not doing enough. Meanwhile Yuki's quite self-assured, to the point of pompousness, while painting themself as lazy so people don't ask for favors, and deep down fearing they don't actually have full control of their power.
Coto and Iku are both very bubbly and upbeat people who like to encourage people to do their best, while also dealing with a lot of their own baggage. Coto's baggage is her trying to compensate for constantly being sickly by ignoring her disability, Iku's baggage is trying to cope with CSA trauma and a genuine fear of people by not letting herself turn into a shut-in.
Tei and Teto both killed their dads, but Teto can barely remember that it happened, meanwhile Tei can never forget.
... but also like, this is headcanons, this is playing with toys, don't take it too seriously HUIKTEGD If someone gets on your ass for like, imperfect characterization, then they're the weird one lol.
