“613 Silky Straight in Swamp” by Susi Brister is impression art piece of the mushroom “Hericium Erinaceus” also known as lion’s mane or bearded tooth fungus. The actual mushroom can not be human size or grow in water. They’re usually found on dead logs, dead trees, and it’s always found hardwoods. They are native to North America, Europe and Asia. In the United States it is usually located in southern states: California, Nevada, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Lion's mane is mostly cultivated in China and other parts of Asia. It was originally used for medicine in traditional Chinese practice where they would add it to teas. “Lion's mane (or Hou tou gu) was consumed historically to help with brain function and gut health, some even claiming it would fight off certain cancers. It is said to have cognitive-enhancing abilities to highten focus, memory, and concentration. Buddhist monks would often use this mushroom for energizing their minds and having more focus for meditation. “ Health benefits include: could protect against dementia, relieve mild symptoms of depression/anxiety, may speed recovery from nervous system injuries, protects against ulcers in the digestive tract, reduces heart disease risk, manage diabetes symptoms, may help fight cancer ,reduces inflammation, and reduces oxidative.
