Mastery Journal Entry: June 2016
This has certainly been an interesting month. Academically, I have published several articles covering live events, a news release as well as a how-to and I’m current drafting a profile article for a local group that I think will be fantastic!
As far as my initial goals for this month... well, there was a little snafu, unfortunately. Nothing terrible, but I had to adjust accordingly. While a graduate student, I do still have a day job. And a recent... let’s say vocational paradigm shift, has put all hands on deck to make sure things continue to run smoothly while waiting for new blood. I work on the production side of local television news. And while this change has now had us kicking in a little extra time to make sure there are no hiccups, the plus side to this is that I went from being senior operations crew to the on-call director for the weekend broadcast. I’m training to be able to do our two Sunday shows. This also puts me in a supervisory role, which is good. That said, with this, I really had to balance my time between work and what was necessary for school, hence the lack of posts here this month.
My other goals, linking respective social media platforms for the purposes of additional exposure has been in effect since the second day my website went live. The downside to this, however, is that it’s hard to gauge how that has benefitted. Of course, to be fair, I did make myself a deal that I wouldn’t begin to advertise until I felt the website had enough content that I could feel confident it would gain repeat viewers. On that note, I wanted to have at least six articles, complete the regional road trip map and schedule at least one upcoming event that viewers could look forward to seeing. My intent is to make the website not just a source of literary information, but audio and visual information as well with elements that allow the viewers and site visitors to be interactive. Currently, I have a section where people can leave anonymous experiences related to the subject matter. Additionally, i have nearly completed an interactive map showcasing local area locations that people can explore on their own and share their experiences with the website. I do have a placeholder in the media section, which will likely remain for the time being as I’m negotiating some things to fill this section with some awesomeness.
As far as the course instruction usage, this month has certainly taught me a lot on how to keep a specific voice and tone while writing in different styles based on the topic, trend, event, etc. With valuable feedback, I feel comfortable in the direction the website is heading and the written content posted. As for this coming month of July, we shall see what surprises await. until then, hopefully I’ll have some time to set aside for more frequent updates.
