Oh boy - here we go. I will keep it brief. And I want to say before writing these out, I have many mutuals - some who i may not chat to all the time or haven’t ever. But I do appreciate each of you, and I apologize for not mentioning everyone. 🧡Sorry if they don’t make sense, I wrote what came to my mind without over-thinking.

@hoseoknysus: Bettybear, Hobi of all smiles. I think of a smol flower bud, striving to bloom and shine your light on others. Hardworking, selfless. I think of you as a soft blue, like clouds. Please stop overworking your mind, soul, and body - I care for you too.

@out-of-jams: Rea. The yoon/chim broski. I always feel a kindling sensation between us, like a sister. You and I squabble playfully quite a lot. I think of coffee beans, silk blankets, and a sign that says “fuck off.” (she’s really nice i promise, but she will burn through you if she has to.)

❛❛ you aren’t alone. you’ve never been alone. ❜❜

The house is dark when you walk in, as quiet and empty as when you’d left that morning. Sighing, you drop your purse onto the floor, stepping out of your shoes and flinging your coat over the nearest chair. Walking over to the fridge, you pull out last night’s leftovers and pop them into the microwave.

You wander as your food is heating up, meandering into the living room where your Christmas tree stands tall and proud. It takes you a few moments to locate the electrical outlet in the darkness, but by the time the microwave dings, your house is illuminated in soft golden light. Grabbing your dinner, you settle onto the couch and boot up your laptop. Christmas movies on Christmas eve—there’s nothing more fitting.

Even if you have to watch them all alone.

Letting out another sigh, you press play and let the couch cushions engulf you. It’s easy to get swept up in the familiar plot of your favorite classic, but you can’t help the forlorn feeling that lingers in your belly. It eats away at you until you’re staring at the screen without really seeing it, a blur of nameless colors and shapes.

And then there’s a knock at the door. 

You blink in surprise. Standing up, you go to peer through the peephole, a smile creeping across your face when you see who’s standing on your doorstep. 

“Jin!” you exclaim, swinging open the door. “What are you doing here? I thought for sure I was going to spend Christmas alone.”

Your best friend frowns at that. “You’re not alone,” he says, stepping forward to envelop you in a hug. “You’re never alone, you hear me? I’m always going to be here for you. Speaking of which…” He pulls back and raises the giant paper bag dangling from his fingertips. “I brought you dessert! You better be hungry—I literally have an entire cake and half a dozen doughnuts in here.”

A laugh escapes you as you usher him inside. “And an entire box of cookies, apparently,” you point out, watching him plop the bag down on the kitchen counter and start pulling things out.  

“They were on sale,” he says by way of explanation, flashing you a grin over his shoulder. “Cake?”

“Please,” you reply, edging around him to grab two plates.

Five minutes later, you and Jin have a slice of cake each, and another plate of cookies and doughnuts to share. “So what were you up to before I showed up?” he asks curiously as he makes himself comfortable next to you on the couch.

You tilt your laptop screen toward him so that he can see the movie title. “It’s my favorite.”

Jin nudges your shoulder playfully. “Can I tell you a secret?”

You hum. “What?”

“You’re my favorite.”

You can’t help it—you snort. “You’re so corny, you know that?”

“I don’t see you complaining,” is his reply.

You can’t argue there. Jin has been a constant in your life since college, and after eight years of friendship, you’ve long since grown used to his quirks. Fondly, you scoot a little closer to him, leaning your head on his shoulder. His arm comes up to wrap around you, and you smile when he angles his body so that you can snuggle up more comfortably against his side.

“Can I tell you another secret?” Jin murmurs, voice soft in the hush that’s fallen. 

You crane your neck up to look at his face, noting the sudden solemnity in his expression. “You can tell me anything, Jinnie. What is it?”

Instead of answering, Jin lets out a long exhale, staring off into the distance. “Do you remember last Christmas? When we were at Jimin’s holiday party?”

You nod. “Sure. Why?”

Jin glances down at you. “And do you remember the mistletoe?”

“Mistletoe?” Your brow furrows. “Was there mistletoe?”

“Yeah,” he whispers, barely audible despite how close you’re sitting. “Yeah, there was.”

You don’t say anything, knowing that he’ll continue when he’s ready. And after several beats, he does just that, a soft sigh escaping his lips.

“I was in the hallway talking to Taehyung when you came looking for me. You were pretty drunk, and I was your ride home.” He swallows thickly, brown eyes flickering down to meet yours before continuing. “Neither of us saw the mistletoe in the doorway, but Jimin and Taehyung wouldn’t shut up until we… well, until we…”

Your eyes are wide. “We kissed?”

Jin nods. “Yeah.”

Your heart catches in your throat. For the longest time, you’ve been repressing your feelings—tamping down the warmth that bubbles up in your chest every time Jin looks at you too fondly and telling yourself that you’re just friends. 

“Jin,” you begin slowly—cautiously. “Why didn’t you tell me all of this sooner?”

Jin rakes his hand through his hair, his brows furrowed. “I was going to,” he says. “I was going to, but when I saw you the next day, you didn’t seem to remember and I just chickened out, I guess. I’m sorry. I know it’s weird that I’m even bringing it up now, but I just couldn’t keep it from you anymore. I needed you to know. Because, well—I think I love you.”

You can’t breathe. Words escape you, but Jin continues on without even the slightest hitch. 

“Actually, no. I know I love you. I have for a long time. That kiss last Christmas—that sealed it for me. But if you don’t feel the same way, I’m more than willing to forget that this ever happened… actually, let’s just start over and pretend that I didn’t just tell you any of this and—mmph!”

Jin’s lips are even softer than they look. Your fingers find their way to the nape of his neck, curling around the soft hair there, and after a moment, he relaxes completely into the kiss. His hands find their way to the curve of your waist, and you smile when he tugs you even closer.

“Tell me something,” you murmur when you pull back for air. “Was that better than the first time?”

“Yes,” he murmurs back. “Infinitely better.”
