Putin Makes a Joke at Kerry's Expense

Funny!

John Kerry, the Secretary of State, was photographed getting off his plane in Russia, carrying his own suitcase (plus a couple big binders full of paperwork). So, when he got to his meeting with the Russian president, Putin made a joke that he felt sorry for Kerry because he had to carry his own luggage.

(I'm paraphrasing to make Putin's words sound like what an American would say.)

Putin: "Is America so bad off that they cannot afford to pay someone to carry your luggage for you?"

Kerry: laughing a bit, doesn't respond

Putin: "But no, I hear the American economy is OK. So I'm thinking maybe you have something in your luggage that you don't want anyone to see?" The Russians on Putin's side of the conference table laugh heartily.

Kerry: looking a bit uncomfortable, sort of laughs

Putin: "Is it money for bribes?"

Kerry: "When we are alone later, just the two of us, I'll show you what's in my suitcase." Kerry, in a serious business voice, then launches into talking points for the meeting.

Awkward!

Why didn't Kerry stand up for himself and give it back to Putin?
