@funnywings YEAH there are a couple of other kripke quotes on bela’s wikipedia page that are word for word “it’s not going to be the bela and ruby show.” “the brothers aren’t going to drive around with two girls in the backseat. it’s not scooby do they’re not going to go go-go dancing.” and then you fast forward ten years exactly and they TRY to make the claire and jody show. i actually don’t think there are ever two women in the backseat lol but they DO go to cases with a woman singular in the backseat. charlie. mary. rowena. claire. jody i think? dean and charlie don’t go go-go dancing but they sit in the front seat and eat dinner together while charlie puts on her Anemic Pop Bullshit and dean bops to it.

and i know it’s just misogyny but it’s fascinating to me that kripke came out of the gate with THESE WOMEN WILL NOT BE ANNOYING AND EVERPRESENT IT WILL NOT BE THEIR SHOW. and afaik claire never got that treatment? obviously people weren’t worried about her pairing off with sam or dean, but from the fact that apparently jack was controversial for baby-fying spn i’m sure people were very loudly saying CLAIRE BETTER NOT BABY-FY SPN. ruby and bela meant preemptively soothing your horses claire was just like. claire even though she was a longer lasting character with more eps and deeper relationships with the winchesters who did “unsympathetic” “antagonistic” things like hire a hit on dean. all the hindsight is just crazy. like a bunch of the looking back on bela done by kripke is that she was TOO present in red sky at morning and TOO antagonistic by stealing the colt. claire gets Claire Eps that are about her and tries to kill dean! cas steals the colt and an episode later dean is too broken to function because he misses him!

I think even fandom falls into that problem of treating Cas as uniquely special compared to the other angels (ally to humanity instead of enemy) instead of seeing them as potential Castiels (and therefore worthy of second chances and opportunity to grow). There was always interest in free will among other angels, and we see that from Anna and Uriel in season 4 through to someone like Anael. That fandom kind of largely repeats the “cas is the only good angel” thing just seems like accepting a very one sided version of the story. Cas has his reasons for doing what he did, but just because it’s justifiable doesn’t mean it’s just or that the lives lost at his hands are less important than the ones he saved.

yeah i mean. i am very much team "cas isn't special he was just there." like. plenty of other angels could have been cas if they'd pulled dean out of hell.

and i mean it makes sense to prioritize him over other angels because like. he's our cas. he's a main character. we've grown to love him. but yeah it's weird when people treat him as like. super special.

They had a whole trial about dean and never bothered trying to reckon with what justice means in a system where death is the only accountability possible for your actions. Amy shouldn't have died, but she shouldn't get to just go on a murder spree and face no consequences either. But instead it's like... Dean killed Sam's friend like a jerk!

Amy should have happened in season 8 with Benny stuff going on, and she should have been who sam settled down with for a while. Then we've got a real parallel going on and a discussion of when do we allow exceptions? Who is worthy of redemption and who isn't? What do consequences look like in a world where you're good or you're a killer, but the only people who can judge you are ALSO killers???

It would have been an interesting basis for a reflection about hunters and monsters but instead it was all about Sam’s feelings. Because he knew her and identified with her. It always happens, moral dilemmas are only allowed when Sam sees similarities between the monster and himself and makes it about himself. And the narrative never questions this. The Amy issue was even worse because the biggest issue was in fact that Dean went behind Sam’s back and lied to him. Amy’s death wasn’t even about her.

(and if her spell did something similar to what that Horn was supposed to do for Belphegor... then all these souls are now tied directly to her magic... I wonder what her own magic would do with that sort of internal battery pack? *flashbacks to her building the Soul Bomb for Dean to be the bomb, to Sam saying yes to Lucifer to drag him into the cage, to Dean becoming the cage for Michael, to Cas eating Purgatory for power and then exploding in a lake... Chuck’s not gone, this is still his story...)

Might have something to do with the sitcom culture of remembering the past through media, where usually the ideas of what the American woman's role in society was is limited to pretty conservative options outside of more radical media like star trek. In the 50s especially the idea of woman and housewife was kind of supposed to be synonymous, even though the reality obviously never was that

and the 60s included a lot of challenging of those conservative ideals.

But I get what you mean. It's always good to point out how people aren't centering others humanity when they talk about them and instead thinking of them through groups they can be placed into

i think there’s an added layer from the fact that we’re talking mothers’/grandmothers’ generations, and of course it’s kind of difficult for everyone to really realize that parents/grandparents’ generations were actually real normal people who were kids and young adults at some point, but i think there’s a point in one’s life where you should make that realization. maybe it’s just me, but the lack of awareness of the full humanity of older generations is a big pet peeve.

also the layer of dehumanizing women who watch television/are invested in media, which we see all the time (aren’t we 30+ people on tumblr creepy old hags who are probably pedophiles anyway?) so using the word housewives to mean women who watch television is not okay in general.
