I think more people should make fursonas and I'm dead serious. the process of self-exploration that naturally comes along with creating a funny little critter to represent yourself is SO valuable, as you consider the types of animals you vibe with and what kind of aesthetic/colours/personality/etc suit you and stuff like that (fun fact this process is how I figured out I was transgender lol. not saying that will happen to you but just proving that you can learn a LOT about yourself through this design process and any subsequent design changes)

and then when you're all done, you have a little freak you can do whatever you want with! edit them poorly into memes, commission lavish oil paintings of them to hang in your mansion, use them as a personal online mascot, design a fucked up evil twin for them to fight, soak them in milk and throw them at the wall, anything really. same stuff some people do with fandom characters they really like, except it's 100% yours and nobody can tell you you're doing it wrong! also now you have an animal your friends can associate with you and they'll send you funny pics/videos of that animal that make them think of you. literally it's just wins all the way down for you and everybody you associate with. everyone should have one of these things!!

Furry/bathroom ramble

I’m calling this the bathroom ramble since I’m currently taking a shit, and imma talk about furries.

Anyways! Recently these past few months I have been getting more into the furry community and been really wanting to make my own fursona, problem however is that I like too many animals that I can’t choose one. I have these phases where I like to learn about different animals and get really attached to them, it’s why I don’t have a favorite animal since I love so many different ones. But that leaves animal-related questions like “what animal would you be” or in this case “what would be your fursona?” Very hard for me to answer

I’ve had a HUGE sloth phase, a hedgehog phase, a HUGE bear phase, a chihuahua phase, a BUNCH of other animals that I know bits and pieces about. I’m a very particular person, so I want to just stick with ONE animal and make sure it’s one that matches me ALMOST perfectly. It’s gotten to a point I’m seeing which one matches me most physically (like in looks), personality wise, even where they are from.

I really don’t want to make multiple fursona, I just want one main one I can use all the time. And also it’s an actual animal and not a made-up species (no hate to anyone that makes their own animal species, just a preference for my fursona). So it’s been kinda hard on picking which one I should use. Also then theres the struggle of drawing my fursona since I don’t draw anthropomorphic animals a lot and I want to get it right. Does anyone know how to help with choosing a animal to use for a fursona and how to draw one?

So I’m working on a fursona with a friend of mine and I wanted to ask something about which color is more important to decide first: fur color or clothing color?

almost definitely fur colour! that's the part that'll be more or less constant, whereas you might put them in various different outfits and colours and styles later.

it's certainly good to at least think ahead in terms of "what clothing colour schemes would look particularly good on this character? what accents their fur/hair colour nicely? what's their favourite colour, or some colours they'll often be paired with aesthetically?" because that can AFFECT how you design the colour scheme/pattern of your fursona, but i' woul'd definitely say that your first priority should be to make sure the design has the right vibe on its own, even without clothing. if you do that first, you'll likely leave yourself with lots of options for how to dress them later

For making fursonas: how does one decide fur color? What elements go into picking one?

it's kinda the same process as any other aspect of character design, I guess? like, thinking about the vibes you wanna convey, things you want to express about yourself through your sona's design, maybe some aspirational elements that you think are cool/fun but wouldn't necessarily wanna try IRL, that sorta thing.

colour theory is weird and subjective, and all of this stuff is sorta personal when it comes to fursonas so I can't really tell you an exact way to approach it, but I guess the biggest thing is deciding between a critter with natural fur colours (browns/greys/etc) vs more vibrant ones? it can kinda convey the "whimsy level" of the character based on where you land between darker, muted natural tones (which are often meant to blend in with surroundings and thus tend to make a character feel "ordinary") to bright, cartoony, eye-catching ones. you can also do a mix if you want, like a character who's mostly dark grey or tan but has blue or red accents for example.

honestly, my best advice for any of this if you're really unsure is to find a few existing character designs that you enjoy and feel like they fit the kind of vibes you're going for, and then sorta pull various elements from each to give yourself a baseline aesthetic that you can customize to your liking. you can always change things further over time, hardly anybody's sona design is entirely static and set in stone, but you've gotta start somewhere

You said that furries don't necessarily have to go the fursuit route, so how anthropomorphic do you have to make it? Like, would a vaguely humanoid face and otherwise almost entirely animalistic body be ok, or is that veering out of furry territory into something else?

folks make all kinds of designs on the spectrum of "basically a human with animal ears and a tail" to "just a straight-up photorealistic cat with a bandana and sunglasses" and everything in between. personally i tend to fall somewhere in the middle, in the more traditional "cartoon animal person in a classic disney/looney tunes kinda way" range (with a bit of my own stylization applied of course, i'm just talking anatomy-wise). but you can do whatever floats your boat i guess! the people making wolf OCs and drawing warrior cats fancomics in middle school were probably some manner of furries even if they didn't have the words for it at the time, so if it works for them then it can work for you!

the biggest deciding factor in my experience is usually like... what do you want to DO with your hypothetical furry OC/fursona? what sort of applications do you have in mind when making them? for example if they don't have thumbs or can't wear pants or otherwise participate in a human-like society, then you may be limited in the scenarios they can easily be imagined in and what sorts of experiences they can relate to... but on the other hand it becomes much easier to edit them into silly animal memes or whatever, and hey, maybe you just WANT to make a funny dog who does funny dog stuff and doesn't have human responsibilities! that's a vibe for lots of people! i'm sure there are lots of benefits whichever direction you lean. also, lots of artists specialize in one type or the other (or both) and will make their preferences known, if art commissions of your character are something you end up being interested in later, so you've always got options regardless. (the keywords you wanna look for on their TOS are usually "anthro" for typical humanoid furries and "feral" for Hey That's Literally Just A Wolf But Purple, for reference.)
