Seaside shingles lichen

I know a few things about biology, but I don’t know much about construction, so like, what is the purpose of shingles? Is it aesthetic? Does it serve a purpose? I was amazed when I went to Iceland and like, none of the houses have shingles. But it looks like sometimes rocks have shingles in the form of F. maritima. But this lichen only grows on costal rocks from Oregon to Alaska. So are shingles like, just a cultural/regional thing? Tell me your shingle secrets.
