Others may argue but I think Old Sam and Max is both the sweetest and saddest moment in the entirety of Sam and Max’s relationship. Even though it’s tragic that Sam will one day lose his mind, this also shows the strength of his friendship with Max and how much he means to him.
Max gives up everything to take care of Sam; he gives up adventuring, fighting crime (causing crime), everything. While it’s clear he misses it he knows that those things will place Sam in danger and he refuses to leave Sam behind. So they stay on their little block and Max takes up volcano study to entertain himself. Not only that, but Max is sweet as sugar to dear, dear Sam who’s mind is rattled.
Thing that makes this all the sweeter? This is MAX. Max, a hyperactive, psycho bunny that attacks people just for kicks and giggles. You’d never think he’d ever become a caretaker to old Sam, but here he is.
