Naked Cameo are doing music videos in the woods, but we still love them
If you’ve followed this blog for a while, you know we have a love/hate relationship with music videos shot in the woods. There really are so so many. At one point, we even vowed to never feature a single woodsy video ever again. But oh well, we’ll always make an exception for an exceptional band.
It all started with Francis International Airport and their seminal album In The Woods. It was my soundtrack not only of 2010, but of 2011 as well. That’s how good it was, and, frankly, still is. Maybe the whole reason we disliked the woods so much is because nobody ever did the woods better than Francis. It was euphoria and melancholia, all at once, and when you’re a wide-eyed 22-year-old interning at record labels and going abroad to study, that’s the perfect recipe to get you high and hooked.
Naked Cameo thrive in different times. It’s playlists, not albums, that capture people’s emotions and suit any situation in 2018. Their debut single Luddite must have been added to loads of playlists; after all, it landed in Spotify’s Viral Charts. (Go ahead, listen to it below in case you don’t know it yet. It’s worth it.)
When it did, I was hooked once more, immediately. Like Honne tracks before it, Luddite used just the right amount of soulful, warmer R&B elements to enhance the regular band set-up and make the song stand out among the wave of cool electronic indie sounds that swept the airwaves in recent years. Yet I expected nothing of the upcoming Naked Cameo album.
Have you noticed how it’s become really rare that you listen to a whole album these days? How you just cherry-pick the hits and put them in your favourite playlist? It’s a good thing, really, this cherry-picking because of the abundant choices streaming music offers. It leaves no room for filler tracks. There’s no more disappointment about having spent all your pocket money on an album that has maybe two good songs on it. So... is the album, like, dead?
Not necessarily. Maybe 2017 was an exceptionally bad year for stand-out albums. But finding an album that is better than the sum of its parts has always been hard. Like Rihanna’s ANTI. Or Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange. Or Francis International Airport’s In The Woods. Sure, whether an album becomes the soundtrack of your life has to do with specific memories, a personal bond. But it helps when a tracklist is thought through, when interludes enhance the narrative instead of only making the album longer, when a song just sounds better inbetween two other specific songs than on its own. And that’s exactly what Naked Cameo’s Of Two Minds manages to do. A rare feat.
With help from their label dad Gerard and production by Leyya’s Marco Kleebauer, Naked Cameo are releasing their debut album Of Two Minds on March 2nd on Futuresfuture. It features not only the previous singles Luddite, Coming For Me and Pocket Dial, but also a track called “Pony” and another one called “Phony”. Genius.
