Future Worlds // Studio IV
Back to class! Turns out I got enrolled in Future worlds, which initially I was a little apprehensive about, until I realised it was really just world-building. I write a lot, and world-building is one of my favorite parts about writing. I’m looking forward to this class, and hopefully I can build a world I’m happy with. I want to create something that is either a game, an animation, or both, as this is what I want to do after uni and I want to start directing my projects and portfolio in that direction.
We went through a few methods of world-building, what kind of details you’d need to think about when building a whole world. Now I need to do some research on what the future could look like to have a base to build off, and go from there. I don’t want to focus to early, like I’ve done previously, so I’m going to do a lot of exploring first.
We also did a warm-up exercise, another round of ‘The Thing From The Future’. I used to have a tendency to go for wild, completely unrealistic ideas, but this has lead to a lot of frustration. This is also true for my past writing, I’d create crazy mechanics or plots, but they’d be unbelievable and also riddled with plot-holes. I’ve gotten kinda sick of that, so I’ve gravitated towards more believable, realistic products and projects.
We played three rounds, and my favourite outcome was from this: we got ‘Grow (A Few Years)’, ‘Disease’, ‘Clothing’, & ‘Fervour.’ My future world/product was that with the increase of disease, a new advertising campaign has released a whole lot of badges for each immunization that you can get, and it has become the new fashion craze to wear these badges on jackets/hats/armbands.
