What's in a Name? – M/F Kuzusouda Ficlet

Summary: Fuyuhiko wants to support his girlfriend, who's just come out to him. The first step? Figuring out what to call her.

A/N: Got inspired to write a lil something about Transfem!Kaz thanks to some fanart I saw on Twitter. I'm cis, so please let me know if anything I've written here is offensive, transphobic or otherwise off.

“So, uh… what should I call you now?”

Souda – Fuyuhiko would loathe to think of his girlfriend with her surname, but her given name no longer seems appropriate – twirls her dark hair around her finger, deep in thought. “I, uh, haven't come up with a new name yet,” she admits sheepishly. “I mean, I've thought of a couple, but they just don’t fit, ya get me?”

“I getcha,” Fuyuhiko says. “What about Isuzu? Or Suzuki?”

She rolls her eyes. “Come on, ‘Hiko, my car brainrot ain't that bad.”

“Could’ve fooled me.” He ducks his head as a pillow flies toward him. “Seriously, though, I can't keep calling you Kazuichi, right? Too masculine and shit.”

Souda leans back against the headboard of her bed, tilting her head towards the ceiling. “I mean… I’m not out to anyone else yet. I wanted to tell you first because you deserve to know most of all.” She pauses for a moment, deep in thought. “I guess you can just call me Kaz, for now. I mean, you already do, but…”

“I get it,” Fuyuhiko says. “You want me to call you Kaz, all the time, until you decide on a new name.”

Souda – Kaz – nods.

“Got it.” He scoots over to join her at the opposite end of the bed and rests his head on her shoulder. “Y’know this doesn't change a damn thing about how I feel about you, right?”

“‘Course.” She kisses the top of his head. “Thanks for accepting me as the woman I am. It means a lot to me.”

A smile tugs at his lips. “Don’t mention it.”

One of the many reasons I swear by "friends to lovers" Kuzusouda is that it allows for a clear comparison between Kazuichi's infatuation for Sonia and his love for Fuyuhiko.

Kazuichi never loved Sonia; he loved the idealised version of her that he'd come up with. He was never really interested in befriending her or getting to know her on a deeper level. All he ever saw of her was the perfect princess who could do no wrong, and he worshipped the ground she walked on. He was so deluded by his obsession that he never accepted that Sonia wasn't interested in him, nor did he ever respect her boundaries.

In contrast, should he catch feelings for his best friend Fuyuhiko, he'd have a much better idea of who Fuyuhiko really is, and he'd love everything about Fuyuhiko, flaws included. He'd be much more covert about his feelings at first because Fuyuhiko's friendship is one of the best things that's ever happened to him, and he doesn't want to risk losing it. He knows that Fuyuhiko's not perfect, that Fuyuhiko is as flawed and human as anyone else, and that he's just trying to be his best self. And, perhaps most importantly of all, Kazuichi would love himself, too. He wouldn't throw himself away for Fuyuhiko, as he would've for Sonia. He'd soon realise that Fuyuhiko loves him for who he is, too, and that he'd never trade Kazuichi for anyone else.

A very eventful night for Fuyuhiko. He struggled to skate and fell in love with the person helping him skate- which happened to be his best friend- 😳

I like to think of Kuzusouda as a journey. A journey from two gay teenage boys dealing with young love and navigating their first relationship as any typical teenage couple would, to two young men fighting their shared trauma and forging a future at each other's sides.
