If you think about it

All the dominant (english) social media today comes from the same generation.

LinkedIn from 2002. 4chan from 2003. Myspace (r i p) from 2003. Facebook from 2004. Reddit from 2005. Twitter from 2006. Tumblr from 2007. The major sites that have popped up since, Instagram, Discord, Twitch, Soundcloud, Patreon and the like, have all been more specialised. Even as problems and complaints have heaped up (fuck off, Zucc), the dominant sites have been unable to die, because there’s no way not to use them- they have userbase critical mass, and their competitors just don’t. So even though we’re getting better at understanding social media and what’s best for it, change was and is dependent on the will of these giants. But if tumblr dies, as it may, then that brings on another flood of users who know what they want from social media and are looking for alternatives. That stacks with the anti-corporate, freedom-of-speech, and decentralisation crowds, and adds impetus from the opposite end of the political spectrum.

So hopefully something new and good will happen to the internet. Sometimes it’s good to have things shaken up.
