Turning the volume back up on the television, I stare at the ceiling and listen to the sound of the puck clacking around while my world slowly unravels at the seams.
I draw an unsteady breath, shaking out my arms. I've always had trouble with visualisation, it's part of the reason I'd started making charts and getting into the physics of it all. Visualisation's always felt…wishy washy to me, like meditation. "I can hear Xaden's voice in my head saying 'it's about the vibes, Violence'," I murmur spitefully. Devera's lips curve. "He's right," she replies. "He is not."
Show a little respect, you troglodyte.

✨ @ficwip's word game wednesday — different
I swallow hard, the words settling in my chest beside some innate understanding that he isn't just talking about me. He's speaking from experience. There were no athletes on the [redacted] roster that looked like him while we were growing up. He didn't have that role model to look up to and people still haven't let him forget it. He's always been 'different' too.
"One of these days, you're going to have to talk to him," Rhi comments, a sly smile on her lips. God, I hope not. "Why on earth would I do that?" I reply. While we've never spoken, Xaden Riorson is very aware of who I am and I'm certain his opinion of me is not complimentary. Rhi gives me a look. Sawyer lifts a brow. I take a deep breath and let it out slowly. If there's a single, universal truth shared between the four of us, it's that I have a ridiculously large, completely irrefutable crush on Xaden Riorson.
"Congratulations," I tell him warmly when he pulls back from his sister. "I almost had him," he jokes and I pat his shoulder.

As my eyes trail over his form, I worry my lip between my teeth and ponder Sloane's accusation. Even if she can see my attraction to him, it doesn't explain his sudden interest in me. I've been attracted to Xaden Riorson for a long time—I have eyes, after all—but that doesn't mean I've ever outwardly shown interest in him, or him in me. It doesn't explain why he's suddenly looking at me with something more than the harsh appraisal he's offered the last few years.
I look up and meet his eyes as he moves to stand in front of me. They're bright; flecks of golden amber glimmering in the glare of the overhead lights. He dips his head, his cheek grazing mine as he lowers his lips to my ear. "Are you interested yet?" he murmurs.
