How do you do your coloring for your gifs? Your coloring on your purple one for t swift was so amazing.
Okay so I know everyone does this differently, but I personally am very much a fan of doing coloring from scratch. Usually, I try to start with a color I know won’t pull from the body color. So for my purple set, finding something that was magenta already and only had to be tweaked to purple or changing something from blue to purple was pretty easy. If you look at my blue and purple set you’ll see I used the same scene from the LWYMD music video because it has a great steady background! Below I’ll show you what I do for this.
What you need for this tutorial:
Photoshop
An understanding of how to make gifs already
Some idea of how to use selective colors
I am going to try to make this short and sweet, but sometimes changing the color of gifs can be v difficult it just depends on the gif and how much work you are willing to do.
Step One: make your gif, I am using one with a steady background that the color can easily be changed on
Step Two: Selective color your layer first. The main background color in this is magenta so I open the magenta selective color and I tweak it so it is purple.
Step Three: Selective color, new layer, neutrals and blacks. So I take a new selective color layer and fix the skin a blacks a bit with neutrals and blacks.
Basically what I have done is completely separated the skin from the color magenta so that when I tweak magenta it only tweaks the background.
Step Four: Curves layer. A curves layer basically just adds light and shadow to the picture.
Step Five: After the curves layer I always do a color balance layer. What this does is help add color back into the skin and the image after brightening it. A lot of the time it also makes things more clear. I usually like to make the shadows and midtones warmer and then make the highlights blue and cyan to help make up for computer screens and how they translate gifs.
Step Six: Another selective color layer for magentas. This is where we make the magenta more purple than pink. As long as you understand how colors work this is pretty simple. Adding more cyan to magenta gets you purple, tweaking this to whatever shade of purple you want is the more complex part.
Step Seven: Levels and another selective color layer. Just because I really like for my gifs to be brighter and I also like for the colors to really stand out, I’ll start alternating a lot between using selective colors and levels to make sure everything stands out.
Step Eight: Vibrance layer. I always do a vibrance layer toward the last part of this to make sure the colors stand out better and to make sure the skin still has color and isnt washed out.
Last Step: Lastly, I ALWAYS add an exposure layer last. The reason for this is because of how gifs save and how it translate onto Tumblr. The settings I use are the same ones I always use no matter what.

do u have any advice on how to make gifs high quality? will any of the things u do work for videos too? xo
so my biggest advice is to get an HQ video. a lot of the time for videos back in like 2009 and before there are these things called feeds that people have now gained access to. a lot of the feeds are in 720p or 1080i. also a lot of like tours and such are on bluray and so they’ve been updated and remastered to work better for gifs. as far as making videos go, yes! coloring on premiere pro works very much like on photoshop just some of the curves are a bit different and are based on r, g, b only instead of a full light spectrum. within premiere pro you can also sharpen video much like you can sharpen gifs.
secondly, i’ll show you how i actually sharpen my gifs and make the gif itself
step one: get ur frames. there are numerous ways to do this. i know a lot of people prefer to get their frames using the kmplayer method, but i personally just use photoshop because i’m lazy
this is how it should look after you have your frames all into the layers. if you will notice, the time stamps on the bottom all say “.04″ i almost always change this to the number above it so “.05″ and then if something i am making doesnt have as many frames i’ll even go as far as “.07″, for this gif i am going to do “.07″ for the time of all the frames.
select all of the frames and then change the time by clicking on the arrow next to .04 and change it to your desired frame rate.
step two: cropping the gif. i’m going to be doing 540x540 just because it is what i like to do for making gifs, but you don’t have to! you can do pretty much anything as long as it is either going to add up to 540 for the width.
step three: making a timeline animation. so after you have a good gif going, you want to click on this little button all the way in the bottom lefthand corner. it will change your frame animation into a timeline animation. back in the day this was not a thing, but thank god it is now because it makes sharpening gifs way easier.
step four: selecting all the frames and making a smart object. this part is perhaps the trickiest part if you’re newer to photoshop, but what you are going to do is go to the top bar and find where it says “select” next to “filter” and “type”. a bar will come down and you will hit ‘all frames’ which will select all of the frames in your animation.
you will then select the “filter” tab and click “convert for smart filters” which is the only option highlighted
step five: sharpening your gif. now that everything is condensed into one timeline object, you will go to where filter is and go down to sharpen then pick “smart sharpen”
i use these settings on smart sharpen almost all of the time, but it is all about personal taste and what you think looks best.
now that you have done this you will want to duplicate this layer group by either right clicking and doing so or using the command on your keyboard: “command + j”
now you will go back to filters and add a gaussian blur filter of 1.0
then click that layer in the layers tab and change the opacity. i usually change it to “15%” but in other cases, like let’s say that the gif already looks sharp before any sharpening actions, i’ll change it to higher. the highest i usually go is about “54%”
so now your gif should be sharp and ready for coloring! just know that sharpening can only do so much and then coloring really helps. curve layers are the best way as well as using color balance layers to bring things out.

honestly, it was by trail and error that i made it. i kept having to change the size and after i got that right i couldn’t get the circle in the right place again unless i used a screenshot of the one i already made. it was a trip. 🤣🤣
anyways, the dimensions are:

there should be a 5x space between everything. i made a psd of the template if you want to download it.

Photoshop CC 2019 (I suggest @chaoticresources for Photoshop cracks and stuff, I didn’t pay for my version and cracking is fairly simple)
MPlayer OSX (for screencaps on a Mac, Windows is different, I believe most people use KMPlayer)

End Result
The Steps
1. Firstly you’re gonna want to download a video file, I get mine from Youtube, I try to download only 1080 HD.
2. Once you have that downloaded, you can open it in MPlayer OSX or KMPlayer, and take screenshots of the scene you want. For MPlayer it’s holding down the Command+Shift+S button all at once.
3. Then, once you have your screenshots, you can go to Photoshop and go to File > Scripts.
4. Then, click on “Load Files Into Stack…”
5. And then you can just select all your screenshots.
6. Once you have your screenshots, they should all be in layers on the side. Go to Window, and then click “Timeline.”
7. Today I’ll be giffing the lovely Sharon Carter. Once you click Timeline, you should see this.
Click on the very first layer on top, and then click on “Create Frame Animation.” (Make sure it says Frame Animation.)
8. Now you should have this.
9. Then click on the 3 little bars over on the right side of the Timeline window, and click on “Make Frames from Layers.”
10. All your layers should start becoming frames. Then, click on the same 3 bars, and click “Reverse Frames.” (Don’t worry, this is just because they load in backwards, your gif will be okay.)
11. Now you want to set the bottom number to 0.05. You can do this by selecting all your frames, (those three bars allow you to do that) and then clicking the little 0 sec thing.
Click other, and then input 0.05
12. Now you can crop your frames. 2 gifs side by side is 268 and one gif is 540. I’ll be going for 268 px.
If your problem is smoothness, then that might be because you have duplicate frames. I individually go through my frames, you only want about 30-40, and if there are duplicates where nothing moves, I delete them.
I play through my frames to make sure I cropped properly, and that it looks how I like, and then I resize.
13. Click on Image, and then Image Size, and you should be able to input your preferred size, 268 or 540, etc. (This is for width, height is up to you. Just make sure it matches your crop dimensions and that your resolution is set to 72.)
14. Now, click on those 3 bars, and click “Flatten Frames Into Layers.”
Great. Now delete everything on the side that doesn’t say “Frame (blank)”
Click on your first frame, and your layer that says “Frame 1″, and then click on the sharpening action.
15. Now, select all your frames. Click on the little bars at the bottom, underneath your frames.
The far left button. At this point, it’s helpful to compile your layers on the side into a group.
16. Then, right click on the group, and click “Convert to Smart Object.”
Now you have a gif!
In order to export, go to File, Export, and then Save for Web (Legacy). These are my settings, although other people have different settings that work for them.
Make sure the number underneath GIF is less than 3M and that the Looping Options says Forever.
This is the end result! (after I added a simple coloring PSD) I hope this helped!
