Lol, so, since this event is happening again again, and since Bucky Quest has ended and I have a new fic series I’m writing called Golden is the Sun, I thought I’d make a post about more more fanfics I rec as well as talk a bit about my own. So, WITHOUT FURTHER ADO -
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER, SOME FICS I REC:
1) Good Dividends by fabrega (GA, 1,930) - “ ‘I brought a cake,' Bucky says.
Sam looks at the cake. In the middle of the cake's white frosting, carefully piped-out icing letters spell out:

I TRIED TO MURDER YOU
THAT ONE TIME”
This such a fun, sweet getting together fic that’s funny and cute. It also has a wonderful podfic version read by greedy_dancer.
2) Kelly, the Well-Meaning and Very Confused Barista by chaya (T, 6,299) - “An outside observer confuses the 'barbershop quartet' as one woman with a really bad habit for cheating. Complete fluff.”
Okay, so I know, it’s not ~ strictly SamBucky ~ BUT! But, this is an adorable peak into a girl creating crazy conspiracy theories from afar then learning it was all a poly relationship in the end and it’s very adorable and a very awesome older fic with a fantastic podfic version read by blackglass.
3) make it with you - a sambucky au by dei (N/A) - “2 years later, journalist bucky barnes and captain america sam wilson started to hear the wedding bells being rang by the public. with sam at the height of his reign as cap, will the two finally tie the knot, or will problems get ahead of them?”
I already talked about the first fic in this series fanboy - a sambucky AU, but the sequel deserves a shout out of its own because it is so good. I love where the author takes the characters, how the proposal works, everything. Can’t recommend this enough!
4) The Truth Beneath Our Ribs by ElisabethMonroe (M, 6,742) - “5 times Bucky wears Sam's things +1 time Sam wears something of Bucky's”
I don’t always go for the 5+1 stories, but this one is fluffy, sweet, and wonderful. There’s also something so endearing and intimate about sharing clothes. The declarations of love in the end are wonderful too.
5) we were a fire with no smoke by notcaycepollard (E, 15,295) - “Sam can’t help but roll his eyes. Take the boys out of New York but they’re still Brooklyn Catholics, that’s clear enough. Bucky catches the gesture, smirks hard enough Sam can see his eye teeth. It should be dangerous but he’s beautiful, pale and charming and recklessly easy.
'You wanna come in?' Sam asks, ignoring the noise Steve makes, and Bucky’s smile gets wider.
‘Yeah,’ he says. Steps up close to Sam. ‘I do.’ ”
What can I say, you can’t go wrong with a fic by notcaycepollard. If you’re looking for an AU that aligns with some of the regular canon, this one is fun. Did I mention there’s vampires? How she plays with the concept is interesting. There’s also a fantastic podfic version read by Tipsy_Kitty!
Those are some of my fav fics, but let me also promote myself a bit at the end. I’ve written one complete fic and have one ongoing fic at the moment! They are:

I try my best to keep canon compliant throughout the parts that are within canon, and try to see a fun branching timeline that could be possible in the MCU in another reality once I start writing past the canon. 2) Golden is the Sun! (Ongoing)
I’ve unofficially dubbed this fic “Two Giant Messes Laughing at Each Other and Getting Perplexed by Each Other Until They Fall in Love” 😂 It’s a Fantasy/Medieval/Royalty/Arranged Marriage AU that’s very fun. If you like complete messes, Sam with wings and avian telepathy, and Bucky having the ability to transform into a wolf, this fic will be right up your alley! 😊

my fave kind of aus are the ones where one of the characters is just really good at cooking. and this fic?? oh my god. so good. food truly is love. it's even more lovely when sam is the one cooking it like sign me up! best part about this fic is that you think you know what the plot twist is but the real plot twist catches you off guard and makes you even happier. i cried laughed with this fr. also developed a new love for food so.. hell yeah
favourite worst nightmare - stereobone
i never say no to arctic monkeys references on titles that's just who i am as a person. op is extremely creative with the dreams concept and sam is so, so humane and so complex and so well written it fascinates me. i wish to shake op's hand and thank them for my life. extremely well done and emotional in all the right places, just. WHEW!

i actually never knew i liked fics where redwing has a heavy feature until this one like. you're right redwing IS perfect. this fic cheers me up SO much it's honestly insane. i was crying laughing at 1am when i read it. everybody is so in character i wish i could just print this fic and cry on it real tears ykno! This text group chat is just so much fun. It’s not necessarily a romantic story by any stretch of it, but it’s just a fun story about people figuring out who the hell is Bucky and why he’s helping Sam fix the boat. It also has an amazing podfic version read by blackglass, GoLBPodfics (GodOfLaundryBaskets), Ravin_Pods (Ravin), Tipsy_Kitty
2) fanboy - a sambucky AU by dei (N/A) - “bucky is a journalist with the biggest crush on the new captain america, sam wilson. he accepted that he won't ever get a response from the beloved superhero... but what if one day he does?”
This twitter AU is AMAZING. It actually makes me want to try my hand at a twitter AU at some point, it’s just this beautiful multi-media story about two awkward guys who like each other trying to figure out if the other guy likes him too as well as the ramifications of a public reactions to relationships. Ugh, I just love it so much and I just learned there’s a sequel so excuse me while I read that lololol
3) behind everything that we do by cm (mumblemutter) (M, 5,617) - “Bucky takes care of Sam, in a way.”
There’s something just so good about Bucky taking care of Sam after he did something dumb that landed him in the hospital, how they interact as Sam recovers from his injuries. It’s sort of about the value of life, survivor’s guilt, the need to strive towards breaking points and how that can break a person. IDK I like it and it has a fantastic podfic read by Tipsy_Kitty
4) i close my eyes until i see (i don’t need hands to touch me) by notcaycepollard (T, 2,257) - “Every month or so, there’s this recurring thought that runs through Sam’s head.This is your life now.
Which is why, he thinks bleakly, it’s utterly fucking typical that as they’re investigating something weird and probably janky some civilian called in over on Rockaway Beach, Sam looks away one minute and when he looks back, Bucky is a tentacle monster.
'Uh,' Sam says. ‘Dude. You.’
Bucky - it’s still Bucky, Jesus Christ - waves a tentacle.”
I don’t know why, but I find fics where people turn into animals are fun in the “Oh wow that’s a kooky but stressful situation” sort of way, and it’s always hilarious when it’s a tentacle creature (and I always appreciate when nothing weird goes down because of that lol). It’s a fun fic and it has a great podfic read by sisi_rambles
5) body language will do the trick by elizabear (E, 1,549) - “ ‘There’s no way you’re going to win this,’ Bucky tells Sam. ‘I am going to love language the shit out of you.’
Sam gives him a considering look. ‘You do seem like you’d be really good at that.’
Bucky’s cheeks flush with heat. ‘Thanks, pal, I—’
Sam smirks, and Bucky’s eyes narrow. He shoves his elbow into Sam’s side and stalks off, leaving Sam cackling behind him.
'Your ass looks great today!’ Sam yells.Bucky reaches up to flip Sam the bird, and he definitely does not feel grateful that he wore his good jeans today. Bucky’s ass looks great every day.”
Fucking. Therapy. Goats. I don’t know what to say, just the idea of them got me cackling, I love how this is the basically two idiots trying to aggressively love each other enough in healthy ways to somehow win therapy 😂 It’s very good.

Summary: As the cookout wraps up, Bucky and Sam are alone on the docks. Old memories bring up old hurts and new confessions, but Bucky is there when Sam needs him.
(Or how Bucky talks Sam through a flashback of Riley. Bittersweet with a happy ending.)
Note: This is so stunningly written. The words were just shooting into my heart. It’s always nice to read Sam being comforted, and this fic handled it really well.

Summary: Sam seriously considers checking the ‘regretfully declines’ box. It’s not that he isn’t happy for Steve and T’Challa or that he doesn’t want to be there to see them get married. He’s just not sure he can handle seeing Bucky up close and in person, even after all this time. He wishes he was a better person. A more put-together person. A more over-it person, but. Well. It’s a Friday night and he’s at home drinking twelve-dollar wine by himself, staring at a little rectangle of fancy stock paper, trying to decide which tiny box he should scribble in.
Note: This was the angstiest (is that even a word?) shit I've ever read. Some tears here, ugly sobs there, and A LOT of screaming. Why do people do that to themselves? (I am people). I actually had to come back to the tags over and over again to make sure ‘Angst with a Happy Ending” was there. I had to make sure I was suffering for a reason. It was all worth it in the end. But I still avoid thinking about it too hard or else I’m gonna start crying again. Ok, I'll shut up now.
Ps. It’s the 4th installment in a series, the first 3 fics are quite short, and they explore their developing relationship. They’re worth the read before this one.

Summary: It’s not a nightmare, so Sam isn’t exactly sure why he wakes. Maybe it’s that even asleep his brain knows something isn’t right; this can’t possibly be real, otherwise he would not be this happy.
Sam has a rough night. Bucky helps.
Note: this is pre-relationship, but Bucky comforting Sam after a dream? Can’t recommend it enough. The main focus is actually past Sam/Riley, but the grief, the pain, what could’ve been, ooof.

Summary: “Shit,” Sam says, staring at the thin golden ring on his finger. He blinks quickly, like he’s pushing through it all: the hangover, the too-bright sunlight, the pure insanity of this moment. Bucky watches the dark curl of his eyelashes, staring for just a second too long.
Sam blinks again, then starts to laugh. “Shit. Well, I guess we’ll have to file for annulment.”
And maybe it’s the leftover buzz of the alcohol, or maybe it’s the way that Sam has started to feel like safety to him, but something makes Bucky blurt it out; he clears his throat and says, “Yeah, or we could just stay married.”
[Sam, Bucky, and a long road to peace.]
Note: this one explores the journey of Bucky falling in love with Sam (it’s Bucky centric). It was an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. Kate Bishop and America Chavez make a very welcome appearance as the neighbors of married sambucky. Yup, there’s fake dating. And the ending was *chef’s kiss*

Bucky swallows and brings his hand up to trace along the hem of Sam's untucked shirt.
They're looking each other dead in the eye. So so close.
Sam's eyes flick up to Bucky's, and he says, "I haven't laughed like that since… Since he—"
"Since what, Sam," Bucky pleads. He wants to know this. He wants Sam to be okay again, to be able to talk about Riley.
But Sam never talks about Riley.
Note: where are my Sam/Riley lovers? This fic destroyed me in the best way possible. The concept itself is heartbreaking, and Bucky being there for Sam in his grief is just perfect. (Also oblivious!Bucky makes an appearance)

Summary: This is a dream, Sam realizes. I'm in Bucky's dream.
Note: I cried like a baby! The idea is interesting, and the dreams were really greatly written, and tangible. It was so cathartic.

8. When You're Ready, I'm Ready by Unclesteeb
Summary: “You ever think about getting help for real?” Sam asks, passing back the blunt. He normally wouldn't bring it up so soon into Bucky’s stay, but it's supposed to snow for like three days straight and that weed is good as shit. He figures Bucky's not going to run on him.
Bucky does make a face and eye Sam carefully as he hits the blunt again. “Why, so you can make an honest man out of me? Put a ring on my finger? Have 2.5 adopted children with me?”

Note: this one is so sad and beautiful. It broke my heart into a billion pieces and twisted my gut. It touches quite heavily on addiction.
Ps, please check the tags carefully, there’s a lot of drug use, and the relationship between Sam and Bucky isn’t healthy.

Hi! Man. How do I interact with events on tumblr? Last time I was on tumblr, I did meta blogging only so this is new but 😂 The rules said I could promote myself and other things, so I guess I’ll promote some interesting SamBucky stories I love as well as my own thing.
So, in no particular order, here are SOME FIC RECS:
1) it’s in the weight he does not carry by Someone_aka_Me (T, 9,957) - “Wherein Bucky is jealous of himself, the other Bucky is very confused, and Sam is frequently exasperated. Featuring time travel, kidnappings, and way too much discussion of destiny, love, and the self.”
I just find the idea of Bucky becoming insecure and dealing with his past, less fucked up self to be a fascinating story and the podfic version read by Akaihyou is amazing.
2) It’s Always Bucky’s Fault Series by LeMera (Agha) (E, 40,634):
Did you see it? - “In which there's supposedly a viral video of the Winter Soldier on his knees sucking off Captain America. Everything is, like always, completely Bucky's fault.”
Did you hear about the boyfriend? - “After a certain video goes viral, Sam and Bucky have to pretend to be in a committed relationship. Of course, Bucky has to take it a bit too far.”
Did you enjoy the meal? - “Having to lie to the world about being in a relationship with Bucky was one thing, but having to lie to his family was another. Sam didn't know how this was going to work, but Bucky seemed to know exactly what to do. In fact, he was just a little bit too good at it.”
Do you smell trouble? - “Sam and Bucky are making this whole fake-relationship, secretly fuck-buddies thing work. The problem is, it's working a bit too well, and now Sam might be in trouble.”
Do you feel it too? - “Ever since Sam and Bucky started this whole fake-dating, fuckbuddies thing, his life has been a mess. It gets even messier when Sam realises he might want more out of the relationship than Bucky does. Best to just end things before he gets his heart broken or things go way too far. Right?”
Did you see it? - Epilogue - “In which there's a viral video of Captain America getting on his knees for the Winter Soldier. But not for the same reason as last time. This time it's actually Sam's fault.”
It’s just a really fun and well-crafted series about a blowjob tape going viral and a fake relationship becoming a real one lol
3) baby we’ll be fine by napricot (T, 2,776) - “ 'Just to clarify, when you say vampires, you mean literal, actual vampires. Not, like, aliens that act like vampires,’ asked Bucky slowly.
'They’re literal, actual vampires, yes,’ said Blade, a combination of words that Sam had never wanted to hear outside of an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. 'And I’ve been fighting them since they killed my mom.’
Sam couldn’t see his eyes, but Blade’s whole face went tense and his next words came like he was forcing them out.
'l could really use some superhero backup.’
This, Sam reminded himself, was his life now. Being Cap. Living with Bucky. Knowing about...vampires. He took a deep breath in, let it out slow. Vampires are real he tried, testing it out. It didn’t feel great.
Sam discovers he's got limits on this superhero bullshit. Bucky sympathizes.”
This is one of the funniest fics out there, hands down. I just love it so much, and I’m sure everyone knows by now how good napricot is in creating fun and interesting stories. There’s also a wonderful podfic version read by seleneaurora.
4) Secret Re(Hate)tionship by Meatball42 (M, 5,770) - “ ‘I’m not going to pretend to date the guy just so the American public will forget that he’s the most prolific assassin of the twentieth century!’
'Sam,' Steve chastised him. ‘You know he didn’t have a choice in doing those things—’
And yeah, Sam had heard this speech a few dozen times. Honestly, the murderbot thing had nothing to do with him and Barnes not getting along. He just plain didn’t like the dude.
But he did care about Steve.”
I don’t know why I like stories about Bucky and Sam falling into fake relationships and just discovering they actually love each other, but I guess that’s a thing I like? 😂 there’s also a fantastic podfic version of this by sophinisba
5) warm blood (feels good I can’t control it anymore) by notcaycepollard (E, 4,492) - “Sam's just chilling watching TV one evening when Bucky comes in and stares at him silently for a minute or two before sitting down on the couch. He's pretty close to Sam.
Okay, he's really close to Sam. Like, Sam would be using the word 'cuddling' if it wasn't so bizarre.
'What,' he says, carefully not looking at Bucky, and Bucky huffs a sigh.
'Steve's not here,’ he says as if it's obvious. ‘Don't make it weird. Just- shut up.’ ”
Well, everyone knows notcaycepollard by now, but this is probably my favorite thing by them. It’s just such a sweet and interesting take on Bucky being cold due to the serum. I’m a fan of it haha there’s also a wondrous podfic version by quietnight.
6) Looking For Knives (I Was Looking For You) by downjune (M, 3,427) - “Bucky didn’t have a gun to return fire. He didn’t even have pants.”
This one’s just such a great friends to lovers story about Sam’s apartment getting attacked with a nice hint of humor and a blubbery mess of a Bucky.
7) I’ll explain everything to the geese by napricot (E, 50,949) - “Bucky is so competent that it hurts my feelings is not a rational complaint to have about a person, and yet, after a year of being Captain America and partnering up with Bucky for the new and improved, post-Blip Avengers, that’s kinda how Sam’s feeling.
It’s not great. It maybe leads to Sam making some rash, ill-advised decisions like claiming he has a previously undisclosed superpower, and then getting caught in a web of lies when he ends up actually developing that surprisingly inconvenient superpower. Talking to birds had seemed like a harmless superpower, but it turns out that birds have a lot of opinions, and they don’t hesitate to tell Sam about them, especially when it comes to his supposedly subpar courting skills. Which is ridiculous, because Sam isn’t courting Bucky. Right?”
This is one of the funniest, most awkward, wonderful SamBucky fics you’ll ever see and I think the hook of it is not only Sam trying so hard to not be mad at Bucky being good at things or Bucky trying his best to woo Sam without Sam getting that Bucky’s wooing him, but the birds. The fucking birds. There should be more bird telepathy fics 😂 the podfic version by quietnight is spectacular too.
8) A world like ours by LeMera (Agha) (E, 41,359) - “Bucky didn't know how they ended up in this medieval, fake reality. He didn't know why he remembered the real world but Sam didn't. But he knew one thing: he had to keep Sam safe. Even if Sam had no idea who he was.”
This one is not as fluff as I usually go, there’s some dubious consent in there, but the idea of a medieval AU just is so fascinating that I had to throw it in. It’s a wonderfully crafted piece as well.

Sam is pretty sure he’s gonna die.
He’s been fucking sick with this fucking cold for two fucking weeks now, and he’s reasonably goddamn certain this is how he’s gonna go.
It’s not the cold that’s going to kill him. Bucky’s looked after him so well he’s in no danger of dying on that front. Honestly, Bucky’s the best nurse Sam’s ever had, which is nice and all, of course it’s nice, but he’s still fairly sure he’s gonna die right now, or at least soon, because he is so sexually frustrated he’s just gonna go up in flames.

“Jamie asked me out on a date,” Sam says.
Bucky swallows. “Took him long enough,” he says, keeping his tone light. He bumps their shoulders together for good measure. “You should go for it.”
“You really think so?” Sam asks, looking at him.
“Yeah, man,” Bucky says. He fixes his gaze on Torres, high up in the sky, sunlight glinting off his wings. It hurts Bucky’s eyes. He blinks, rapidly. “You should be with somebody who can make you happy.”
(In which Sam starts dating someone who is not Bucky, and Bucky pines, gets seriously injured, and proves himself wrong.)

“S’not my bed time,” Sam says as he buries his face in Bucky’s upper arm.
Bucky laughs. “Tough. You’re sick.”
Sam lets out a loan groan and says, “But my bed is cold. I was so warm, why’d you move me?”
“Because your neck would’ve hated you if I didn’t.” He tries not to be so amused by how fussy Sam is when he’s both sick and half-asleep. It’s cute.
