The G Gang for @renmarrr
Why I think Gaster Flowey is defensive mechanism/hallucination that Fatal's mind created
Ok what do we know about Gaster Flowey? The first time he appeared was in chapter 3 and before that he only appeared as a voice. In the Aftertale lore, Gaster also bothered Geno and apparently he won't let go of Fatal either.
But is it really Gaster? Fatal in the comic experiences a lot of hallucination episodes so this Gaster could be a hallucination, which was confirmed in the Patch Notes!
But then what is he? Of course, the fact that Gaster was in the shape of a flower already aroused suspicion, but most of all his actions.
In the FE lore Gaster is the one who pushes Fatal to take radical action and, surprisingly, even comforts him (if gaslighting counts as comforting). But why would he do that? What will it do for him? That's where the theory comes in that Gaster Flowey is a Fatals defense mechanism, created by his shattered mind trying not to go completely insane.
Fatal is suffering from grief, trauma, and his Papyrus project is a complete failure. And as Gaster Flower mentioned, he's not an idiot and knows what he's doing wrong, but he won't admit it. Fatal has already thought about taking the code from Papyrus and it's clearly caused him a lot of stress judging by his reactions in Chapter 3. Killing someone is a very traumatic experience, which is why Fatal needs justification, in his opinion killing can be justified if it has a reason (and bringing back Papyrus is very much an important reason for him). This is where Gaster Flowey pops in.
All of his actions were aimed at getting Fatal to act, he also tries to reassure Fatal by saying that "you did nothing wrong yet", "they're not even real" or "they don't matter". I was also surprised by the fact that he knows more about Fatal's abilities than Fatal? Or that moment when Fatal's text changes to white and becomes suspiciously similar to GF's text? I also think that Fatal knows about this because in Chapter 4, part 1 he says to someone (presumably Gaster Flowey) "I will reinstall your speech now" and then immediately in part 2 GF appears when before he suddenly disappeared
This would explain why in Patch Notes Fatal told this to Patch
P.S. The idea of defense mechanisms comes from psychoanalytic theory, a psychological perspective of personality that sees personality as the interaction between three components: id, ego, and super-ego. These psychological strategies may help people put distance between themselves and threats or unwanted feelings, such as guilt or shame.
(Gaster Flowey says "someone is dead because of you")

I was sifting through some sketchbooks and found a few random doodles so I figured I’d toss them on the blog! The first two were when I was planning Chapter Three, and the last just being a moody Fatal drawn in pen XD
