“Right.” He sighs, and places his hand around her waist, shocking her still. She looks up at him with wide eyes, but he keeps his eyes on the horizon. Eventually, she relaxes and moves into his chest, pressing up against the metal breastplate as his arm came snug around her shoulder. “I’m glad you’re here.”

So, I was going to post reviews for Halo episodes 2&3, but then I saw episode 3 and…
Alright, y’all, just watched the first episode of the Halo show — thinking about putting out a small review out sooner rather than later. Spoilers inbound, of course.
Anyone interested??

MINORS NOT ALLOWED‼️ I am constantly consistently and unpredictably speaking about 18+ topics, so this is your warning to click out!!
USED TO BE @bravuracameos
I really don’t like Summer Rose. As a character, she’s great (cutie pie, really) but narratively speaking, I hate her. She was cool at first, because she was this mysterious super-mom/huntress who almost definitely died fighting Salem (and this gives Ruby personal stakes because she was involved in this fight way before the Fall of Beacon) and we were all desperately waiting for information on her. And then this happened:
She’s dressed like Ruby. According to the comics, she acts like Ruby. She has the same silver eyes that make Ruby special (and probably is better with them because no one ever bothered to teach Ruby how to use them and she never asked either-). SHE’S LITERALLY RUBY’S MODEL BUT WITH LONGER HAIR.
That last one is a prevailing problem with RWBY because every daughter looks exactly like her mother (and Ren and his dad), but at least there are differences in personality and style, thus making our main girls individual, special characters who are interesting and unique enough to be the main characters. (RT has basically forgotten that they’re supposed to be the protagonists, but let’s gloss past that.)
Ruby Rose has not been given a character arc since, like, Volume 2. She is barely given the chance to help with other people’s arcs, and she hasn’t been allowed to move the story forward herself in a couple of volumes. What little personality she had has been stripped from her over the course of the volumes. Why, WHY would you make her feel even less special by making the carbon copy of her dead mom?! Next thing we know, Summer was a weapon nerd as well! If not for already having stated that Qrow was why she uses a scythe, CRWBY would make Summer a scythe wielder as well! (Though I’m not really excluding that possibility just yet; after all, RWBY has made some pretty drastic retcons before.)
And beyond that, to keep the shroud of mystery over Summer Rose, we lose on character development. Ruby, Yang, Qrow, Tai and Raven’s development are all ultimately stagnant until they can resolve the huge Summer-sized hole that her death left behind. Any little move forward they make won’t really matter because what about Summer? Ruby, Tai, Raven and Yang haven’t really been developed at all, and Qrow kicked his alcoholism (which Summer was possibly the cause of, but we don’t know-) and got dragged into a queer baiting subplot. Is Summer’s death the reason Raven is terrified of Salem? We don’t know.
I love a good mystery, especially long drawn out ones but only if it pays off: and somehow, I don’t think it will. You’ve been actively keeping half of your main cast, and all of their parental figures in the same place narratively for most of the show, it better be acknowledged but RT rarely does any of that. Both girls forgot about Summer until V8 and she’s probably going to come back and everything’s going to be instantly sunshine and rainbows between the three. Raven is going to be shafted because they don’t know what to do with her character, just like Tai got like three sentences about him outside his scenes despite being their father.
Despite all of this, it all circles back to Ruby Rose for me. Every character with a dead parent gets compared to them, and it’s sweet (e.g: Harry and Lily Potter), but when that gets to a ridiculous level, it just makes your character look like an imitation and that’s not fair to the main girl of the show.
So, one of the main things I hear about RWBY is that “Miles Luna is a bad writer! Jaune is his self-insert! He can’t write at all!” I personally don’t believe that Jaune is his self-insert, but it can seem that way because he’s one of the (if not the only) character to receive consistent character development. Why is that? I don’t know.
But I KNOW that Miles Luna isn’t a bad writer — anyone who’s seen Red Vs Blue will agree.
Red Vs Blue was a miracle in that it went from a random comedy bit thing that was supposed to be only a couple episodes long, to the fleshed out, consistently entertaining, emotionally satisfying series that it is. This is in no small part because of Burnie Burns’ amazing writing capabilities.
So when Miles took over as writer and director, there were... concerns, to say the least. But he came in, with an all new cast, and managed to keep that level of quality steady — which doesn’t sound impressive, but it really is. From the humor, to the world-building, to the establishment of new characters, he nailed it. He gave everybody character development, and not just the exquisite manipulation arc between his character, Felix and Locus.
But this just makes it worse for me because why isn’t RWBY getting the same treatment? Apart from the Apathy arc, the writing has been fine at best, and completely illogical at worst (and is the usual standard.) Our protagonist, Ruby Rose, never gets any character development except RT directing Lindsay to make her Ruby voice wayyyy higher and a bullshit hand-to-hand development that consisted of two scenes.
In the Ozcars - an awards show thing that MurderOfBirds started doing since Volume 7 (go vote if you haven’t yet!) - ONE of our four main protagonists is listed as a MAIN CHARACTER. And that’s probably only because Ruby is the eponymous hero.
It’s not like RWBNP and JOYR have finally been given more than three minutes of dialogue. No, no, WINTER is a main character because she’s a Maiden. Even Emerald and Salem I understand, but COME ON! At this point, despite really appreciating that they didn’t make RWBY Maidens, I’m kinda wishing they would if only to make them integral to the plot. Bad enough that you cut away from Yang falling for a freak out by HARRIET (the actress did a good job, but... no.) You even took away the storyline QROW had and gave it to her! NONE of our main characters had a really storyline this volume!
I’m so glad they’re splitting off RWBY and Jaune for Volume 9. They might finally be given a plot line.
P.S you know I’m pissed when I reached the tag limit (I didn’t even know that was a thing!)
