"I am God— Without one friend, Alone in my purity World without end. Below my young lovers Tread the sweet ground— But I am God I cannot come down. Spring! Life is love! Love is life only! Better to be human Than God—and lonely.”
"What do you think of that?" Gabriel hums attentively, folds closed the book in their too large palms and presses the edge tentatively to their lips, steeling a heavy glance over the margins at Michael. Gabriel's voice is light and lucid, warm but fleeting and their irises swell and dilate and swell again, a momentary lull in the upkeep of their mortal ticks. A laugh bubbles up like a spring from their lips, amusement fraying the edges of their lips, though without condescension.
"Love is life only.... what a peculiar thought. Still, I do love the poets..." Gabriel trails off with a heavy sigh, having satiated their interest. Their smile stays pleasant and vague, but something grows distant briefly in their gaze.
"Have you ever felt...lonely, Michael?" The word falls from their tongue, heavy and slightly distorted, a foreign cupeling of sound and Gabriel lulls their head to the side, laughs low again, just for the sake of it.
"In this form of course, I mean....the human body is so.... heavy."
