Portable equatorial sundial, Made by Jacob Emanuel Laminit (German, 1719–1760), Augsburg, Germany, 1748.

This portable equatorial sundial, of 1748, is a finely crafted instrument by Jacob Emanuel Laminit. Laminit lived and worked in Augsburg, Germany arguably one of the premiere centers of scientific gadgetry in its day. It was here that some of the world’s most beautiful sundials were constructed. This particular piece has added features—a pop-up hour circle and latitude arc.

It appears some of you don't seem to understand so let me lay it all out for you:

- A Machine can do everything, and is used to create things for the user. There is a certain degree of understanding required in order to operate a Machine effectively. A Machine is complicated, but not incomprehensibly so, whose mechanics can be intuited easily given enough time.

- A Device can do lots of things, but not everything, and is used to do work for the user. There is not a certain degree of understanding required in order to operate a Device. A Device is vastly complicated, whose mechanics may be intuited, but only fully understood by select intellectuals.

- A Gadget may only do one specific thing, and is used to assist or help the user. There is little to no brainpower required in order to operate a Gadget. A Gadget is incomprehensible, hopelessly complex, whose mechanics remain a mystery to even the highest powers of our mere existence, like a God.

I received my copy of 「Gadgetry」in the mail so I’m going to be posting a few pictures I took. I don’t have a scanner so sorry about the quality. These are all Heine + Badou centric, but the art book features many of the other characters in DOGS as well. I could post some other pages, if anyone’s interested in seeing them!
