You tend to rip every show with wlw ships a new one. In your honest opinion, what is a positive example for an lgbt ship on past or current TV?
This is a tricky question to answer because before The 1OO there really had never been a show (that wasn’t on cable and/or targeted to a niche audience like The L Word) that put a wlw relationship at the forefront. It opened the door for the floodgates of other shows and networks trying to capitalize on what they saw as a big market. What’s come after is trash in terms of quality. Before the 1OO, there’s a few shows that come to mind but don’t expect anything to be CL level of epicness. Quite a few of these could have had that level of really incredible rep but that went sideways at some point. I loved what I got out of them anyway.
BBC True Love (Episode 3: Holly & Karen) - By FAR my favorite on the list. True Love was basically an anthology of five 30 minute episodes released in 2012 that followed the love life of a group of people that somehow end up being vaguely connected. It had incredible names attached so I’m still holding on to hope that even though it’s been 5 years they will still release a season 2 because they’ve never officially said it was cancelled. Each episode is pretty self contained so you don’t necessarily have to watch any of the others to enjoy each individual story, you’ll just be missing the way people are connected to each other which is really fine if you’re only going to be watching this one episode. I managed to track the full thing down on YouTube. Quality isn’t the best, but it looks like it may be the entire episode. I’ve watched Billie Piper in a lot of things, but this will always be one of my favorite performances of hers because you don’t know the true measure of an actor until they are able to hold their own on a mostly-improvised drama. Kaya Scodelario was impressively there matching Billie play for play and those two together…so very great to watch.
Rookie Blue (Seasons 4 and 5: Gail & Holly) - One of my favorite shows in general and when they decided to give Gail (my favorite character and not because one of my buds plays her) a queer arc and introduced Holly as her love interest I was beyond ecstatic. For however long it lasted, it was very well written and the performances by Charlotte and Aliyah are on point. It was also an interracial wlw ship so it was good rep on more than one front. You really can’t go wrong with the “I hate everything and everyone” snarky cop and the “I’m going to roll my eyes at everything rude you say because I know inside you’re just a soft puppy” forensic pathologist. I won’t spoil too much, but even though no one dies there isn’t particularly a happy ending for them. There isn’t much of an ending at all tbh…bit of cop out at the end. They did give Gail a great arc overall and that included further developing her sexuality, but I’m sad that after two seasons of build-up they wasted all the potential that Gailly had as a couple. But honestly, even if you don’t just watch it for the two of them, this show deserves your time anyway. I will forever be bitter of who Andy ended up with, but that won’t take away the fact that beyond that, the show is really great. I’ll give you their first kiss.
You Me Her (Season 1) - I will admit, I haven’t watched the entirety of the first season yet, but the couple episodes I’ve watched I’ve really enjoyed. It’s about a married couple who need to spice up their sex life and hire an escort…then everyone starts falling in love with each other. So basically I found my perfect TV show with bisexual, poly, and wlw rep in one. It stars Priscilla Faia who also starred in Rookie Blue. She’s such a great actress and plays the “escort falling for the married woman” role pretty perfectly. Here’s the trailer for Season 1.
Dark Angel (Seasons 1 and 2: Original Cindy) - For me, this will always go down as the show that never got enough time. Back in the year 2000 it was doing things and pushing boundaries that were so out there that it constantly got them in trouble. In my opinion it’s the only good thing James Cameron has ever done besides Titanic. 17 years ago having a black character on one of the Big Five networks who was unapologetically lesbian and kissed girls was pretty much unheard of, yet DA went there. I had to sneak around to watch this show because my dad forbade me from tuning in after he walked in on a scene of Cindy kissing her girlfriend. The acting on the show is less than stellar, but it really had a lot to do with the way TV was directed twenty years ago than with anything else. Even with Jessica Alba butchering some scenes, you really can’t help but enjoy the show because of the sheer brilliance of the premise. The ensemble cast is strong despite the obvious weak links and they all get stronger between Season 1 and 2. Unfortunately the network pulled the plug after Season 2 because of 9/11. The timing of what had just happened on the show and what the fallout we were supposed to see on Season 3 was going to be was basically deemed “Too Soon” after the attacks. If you want to watch a brilliant dystopian, action, sci-fi lead by a KICKASS latino woman and don’t mind being left with a cliffhanger that still eats me inside 17 years later, then please watch this show.
Doctor Who (Series 6-Present: Madame Vastra & Jenny Flint; Clara Oswald Series 6-9) - In Vastra’s own words: “She’s a lizard woman from the dawn of time and Jenny is her wife”. The Paternoster Gang are one of my favorite recurring characters and it goes beyond the fact that two of them are married ladies. They’re so well written and well acted. There really isn’t much more I can say. They aren’t nearly in enough episodes as they should be, but every time they make an appearance it ends up being hella memorable.
While Clara was never given an onscreen wlw romance it is pretty much canon that she is bi and had an on-and-off relationship with Jane Austen. She talks about how good a kisser Jane is. Poor thing is so smitten. In other episodes (Into The Dalek) Clara so blatantly checks out/flirts with girls that you are tempted to scream at the screen “tone it down you big gay” :)
Have Matt introducing the Gang with hilarious commentary.
Sense8 (Season 1: Nomi & Amanita) - Freema’s painfully atrocious acting aside, Nomi and Amanita’s story is very well written so it would be silly to not include it in this list.
OITNB & POI - Y’all can hate on these shows all you want because of the shallow and oversimplified interpretation some people have of BYG, but since the beginning they had and continue to have some of the best wlw rep out there. Yes, that includes the latest seasons which was one of the most brilliant ones both shows ever produced.
Orphan Black (Seasons 1-3: Cosima & Delphine) - I will never watch this show again because of the ignorant crap that came out of Tatiana and the showrunner’s mouths after the reaction people had to Delphine’s apparent faux death, but that doesn’t erase that before that cheap cliffhanger Cophine was one of the best wlw couples out there.
Honorable Mention: UnReal - I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet, but everyone I trust talks wonders about it so it’s on my list. I’ve heard the leads are wlw…or something like that???
