Shiro was born in Japan and went to middle-school there. However, he spent his high school and college years abroad in the Garrison, being an outstanding student.
So as a result, when everything’s done and everyone gets home, he’s surprised to see he still has his old middle school gakuran (uniform) when Lance sees it in a bunch of memories at Shiro’s home. Lance is in utter awe of it and though he wants to hold it, he feels like he’ll dirty, ruin, or ruffle it as it looks so pristine.
That’s when Shiro breaks off the second button from the top (with ridiculous ease).
Lance is, at first, shocked and is babbling (”Whoawhoawhoa! Shiro! What the heck?! Why’d you do that?! That’s an important memory from your childhood!”). Shiro feels a little bad that he made Lance a bit panicky (though admittedly, it’s kind of cute), then hands over the button to him. At that point, Lance is still babbling in shock.
“Wait! I can’t just take this!”
“It’s okay, Lance. I want you to have it.”
“No way! This belongs to you! You shouldn’t be wrecking your stuff, especially stuff from your childhood, because of me!”
“Lance. Please. Accept it.”
As much as Lance feels like he ruined something really important, he, Hunk, and Pidge eventually go look up what it means to have this second button to see if there’s some significance to the gesture. Needless to say, when Lance finds out, he’s all giddy and dancing on cloud nine.
And he keeps that button really close.
