On April 11th 1939 The game of darts was officially banned in Glasgow pubs.
The Burgh Licensing Court in Glasgow in 1939 decided to ban 'all kinds of games' on the grounds that they encouraged drunkenness or more especially what they termed 'ne'er do wellism'.
The Glasgow and District Licensed Trade Defence Association appealed and within a few months the ban was lifted for some games, dominoes included, but not darts.
The ban on darts stayed in place until after the end of the Second World War. However, by the early 1950s Glasgow hosted the first ever darts championship of Scotland

This South African bulbous plant is generally known as paintbrush and its curiously shaped flowers, which are actually inflorescences, were sure to make a statement right at the entrance of Glasgow Botanic Gardens. It is present in cultivation as an ornamental and is very successful as a houseplant, doing well in a tight container and requiring little attention. Apparently it is also easily propagated through offsets detached in spring, while it can also be grown more slowly from the seeds contained in the fleshy, bright red fruits which are only sporadically produced by potted plants.

In my TBT post last week I said I was going to see SLF in Glasgow. Normally that would be the end of it, but I felt that I had to write today, just over a week later, to describe the night. I’ve been to countless gigs, and have lost count also of the number of times I’ve seen SLF, though it’ll be in the teens or early twenties I think. This gig was different though. Read on to find out why. …
