🐠 Daily Fish Fact: 🐠

The Wahoo is a scombrid fish, (the mackerel, tuna, and bonito family) found worldwide in tropical and subtropical seas. It is best known to sports fishermen, as its speed and high-quality flesh makes it a prized and valued game fish. The barracuda is sometimes confused with the wahoo, but it is easy to distinguish from the latter two species. Barracuda have prominent scales and larger, dagger-like teeth, and lack the caudal keels and blade-like (forked) tail characteristic of the scombrids.

The striped marlin (Kajikia audax) is a species of marlin found in tropical to temperate Indo-Pacific oceans not far from the surface. It is a desirable commercial and game fish with a record weight (in 1982) of over 200 kg (440 lb) and a maximum length of 4.2 m (13.8 ft). The striped marlin is a predator that hunts during the day in the top 100 m or so of the water column, often near the surface. One of their chief prey is sardines.

A marlin is a fish from the family Istiophoridae, which includes about 10 species. It has an elongated body, a spear-like snout or bill, and a long, rigid dorsal fin which extends forward to form a crest.

Yellowfin tuna often travel in schools with similarly sized companions. They sometimes school with other tuna species and mixed schools of small yellowfin, and skipjack tuna, in particular, are commonplace. They are often associated with various species of dolphins or porpoises, as well as with larger marine creatures such as whales and whale sharks.

#2583 - Salmo trutta - Brown Trout

The binomial Salmo trutta (trutta is literally Latin for Trout) was originally applied to the brown trout that move to saltwater when they reach adulthood, and return to gravelbeds far upstream to spawn - but it turns out some populations never leave the river, and others only migrate within freshwater, and these had been given their own binomials. A highly adaptable fish, with such variety that there are dozens of synonyms for Salmo trutta, and three still recognised subspecies.

Unfortunately that adaptability is why they're a very invasive species in many parts of the world, where they were introduced as a game fish. The number of cultured trout grown in captivity and released to restock rivers means there are now very few areas left with completely wild genetics anyway.
