In Moviebob We DON'T Trust
A recent video of Sargon of Akkad’s alternate channel Vae Victis discussed Bob Chipman and Jim Sterling basically trying to cover their butts over SJW nonsense getting DOA region-locked. Great video by the way, (though to anyone it may concern it has suggestive themes and swearing) but one comment best summed up how I feel about Sterling is particular.
I like to be able to separate issues like this when it comes to people like Jim. I think his game criticisms can be valid and his videos about the industry at large are pretty on-point but I lost a lot of respect for him after he made his DOA video. The whole thing played off like someone who had nothing intelligent to say because he knew he'd [expletive] up so he was trying to pre-emptively make fun of anyone who might criticize him for his earlier statements. I think the biggest issue for me, which is a criticism I have of all SJWs, is that he couldn't admit he was wrong. He couldn't make an unbiased video saying "oh [expletive], this went too far" and amend his views, at least to some degree. He just couldn't bring himself to do it, so he made fun of everyone and tried to shift the blame to anyone other than himself or his SJW buddies.
So, Bob “Moviebob” Chipman posted another video in his Game Overthinker series called “The Industry’s Big Lie”. Here, he explains (or affirms, it’s really unclear to me which tone he’s taking) that “AAA games = dumb, fun and high budget while indie games = intellectual, sometimes pretentious and artsy”.
I disagree with the whole AAA vs indie games debate and I’ll post what I posted on the video.
I personally never bought into the whole "AAA vs. indie games' debate to begin with because there's so much grey areas and obvious exceptions within both camps. If AAA games are intended for the 'hardcore demographic' and 'dudebros', what do you call the success of games such as The Last of Us or the new Tomb Raider franchise? What do you call games like Dragon Age which does feature a diverse cast of characters including Persons of Color, homosexuals and bisexuals and even transgender individuals? If indie games are meant for artsy, fartsy pretentious hipsters, what do you call Hatred, a violent isometric shooter designed for the GTA crowd? How can people claim that indie titles have more independent control when even a Kickstarter project like Double Fine's Broken Age can gain $3.3 Million dollars in production and still run out of money in the middle of production?
It's funny that Bob put up his parody of Razorfist, because Razorfist mentioned the death of the middle market and how gaming companies had to go one way or the other after smaller gaming companies were either bought out or forced to literally 'go big or go home' to compete in today's market. But as for the dichotomy? I just don't believe it. I've seen examples (even if they were exceptions) of AAA games trying to be high-minded while indie developers try to be as shallow and pandering as their more expensive cousins.
tl;dr: If AAA games are for the lowest common denominator, what do you call games like Spec Ops: The Line or The Last of Us? If indie games are for pretentious hipsters, what do you call a game like Hatred?
I wanted to go back and watch MovieBob’s game overthinker back-catalogue of videos, but I watched the first two and I feel sick to my stomach? Like I can tell he’s genuinely changed for the better and I’m absolutely thrilled he has. His opinions are less oppressive and he tries to think harder from the point of view of others.
I still want to watch his older videos, but I need to know, when is the general point where he stopped being kind of a misogynistic dickbag and started become more the cool uncle he is in his current videos?
(Note: I’m not saying that his old content somehow makes him a bad person, he’s grown and changed. The stuff I said five years ago would embarrass me now. I’m just asking because I want to view his back catalog without it triggering me?)

Even Bob Chipman knows how flawed the Bechdel test is. BOB “MOVIEBOB” CHIPMAN.
