I will say, even as a Linux user and pusher, the one area I feel like Linux is heavily neglected in is old games.
People say that Linux is very gaming capable these days, and they’re right… if you’re a mainstream gamer. If you want to play modern AAA games on modern gaming hardware, then WINE and Proton can run it flawlessly.
But step back into games that are 10+ years old, and… it’s like trying to keep a frail, anxious horse from passing out and dying.
Oh, and wanna run old games on low-end hardware? Yeah… that’s not gonna work. The less optimized WINE and Proton are for a game, the more their performance losses are noticeable.
I can play HITMAN: World of Assassination on medium graphics–no problem–via WINE. But the second I ask it to run a Nancy Drew Point-and-Click game or The Sims 3, it shits its pants, and I’m forced to go back to Windows.
