can i get other examples of gamepress being wrong about arknights? i've been using them as my main source since i started and now i'm worried i'm missing out on some operators i haven't bothered to upgrade š
We could be here literally all day because it's not like they have one or two outliers, Gamepress is just mainly edited by people that live in an echo chamber and that have authority in their own circle so it's just off-the-hip, all too often wrong biased takes based on their own really reductive metrics. Chiefly, Gamepress ranks characters 1) as if they were the sole unit in the battlefield almost exclusively, and 2) using the single most broken units currently live as the barrier of entry. The unit you are looking up can't clear a chunk of map in one tap? Worthless and sub-optimal, according to Gamepress. Their only metric is Mlynar, Ch'ung the Hung, Surtr, that kind of Press To Win philosophy, and if a unit can't do that, Then It's Bad And Not Worth It.
Now, you may be thinking, "goodness me, Dreamer, you are being awfully harsh to call them complete dogshit at every angle of the game in this manner!", well, see, it's not just their Operator "reviews", they have articles sometimes. And they are god awful dogshit as well, such as "What Happened To Blaze?"
You can't see the comments anymore, but the author was getting reamed. I have one screenie at least:
Comments were mainly of this nature. Because, well, the article is straight up awful, especially since it reduces Blaze to "laneholder" and compares her to "competition" like Thorns, Mudrock, and Mountain, who, yes, they all can hold a lane, but Blaze has her own space of "infinite duration, high statline, healable 3-block with 2 tile range" that has historically allowed for Funny Tricks like clearing enemies through "walls" on tiles that could shred Thorns even with a healer, or, you know, in conjunction with any of Mudrock or Mountain, given you have 12 whole slots for you team. Again, Gamepress editors rate characters as if they were your main in a fighting game and not one of 12+1 characters you can throw in at any time. They also tend to shit on non-specialist characters (generalists; more versatile units that can do a bunch of things without really breaking the game in any regard), which is very interesting because those usually will make up a strong backbone of any competent Integrated Strategies team, so the specialists in role can do their thing while the other needs of the map are being met.
"Ebenholz is nothing special." "Goldenglow is nothing special." These are takes they genuinely held until, you know, it turned out that Eben and GG are the most relevant Casters, up there with Eyja. To be fair, it wasn't just them being wrong on Eben, but how do you look at the global blasting of GG with her numbers and don't immediately realize that's an ICBM button? All it takes is having the game installed.
The biased nature of Gamepress is also blatant:
Imagine rating April as "Really Good" while relegating Dorothy as only "Really Fun". Even before her Module3, Dorothy was absolutely devastating, bringing huge damage multipliers, crowd control, one of the single best class autoattacks in the whole game at 6* stat weight, and a Talent that gives her even more Attack for basically using her as intended. I'm not saying April isn't good, mind you, I'm just trying to highlight how biased the hands behind Gamepress are: They can't figure out Trapmasters? Then surely they are merely "really fun". Can't drop and forget them like April or Surtr, after all.
About the only thing Gamepress is good for is objective, in-game info: Dates, mat requirements, what skills do, that kind of stuff. It's got a good interface and is a good place to just quickly look up what you need to know that can otherwise be found in the game. The moment their personal opinions come into play, though? The most absolute dogshit takes. Unless you are a "unga bunga drop Surtr and Mlynar and win instan-- WAIT WHY IS INTEGRATED STRATEGIES AND RISK 23+ KICKING MY DAY 1 PLAYER ASS...!?" kinda player, then you don't really want to follow Gamepress advice.
Because they simply do not give good advice as a whole.
So, Gamepress dropped a new tier list for Touhou Lost Word, and frankly, it's so stupid looking that it loops right back around to being funny. I mean, the majority of the cast being in D-tier? And most of them at that being the characters in the regular summoning pool? Shit's crazy.
Tier lists are merely a suggestion from the weak-minded and should only be taken seriously by those too weak to dedicate their resources to their favourites.
If I can dedicate a majority of my resources in FEH to Dierdre, then I can sure as hell make the most out of only really having access to the power-crept units in LW.
Also, the solution to any problem in life is obviously Getter Robo. For it is in Getter that we find salvation.
wow, fuck you gamepress for your analysis and how to use Diarmuidās skills.Ā
āWhen it comes to Diarmuid's skill leveling, there is only one rule: simply don't. Being an exceptionally bad Servant with two terrible skills means that most people can tell at a first glance that one should not spend any of precious ascension resources on this guy unless you really like him. If one is somehow unfortunate enough to be charmed by Diarmuid's love spot, then go with an order of 1 -> 2 -> 3 to salvage as much utility as you can get from him.ā
I will spend every little thing I got on Diarmuid, not only because his lovespot doesnāt effect me but his character does!Ā
Gamepress is so helpful with events, locations for ascension materials but man...that paragraph alone shows they can be a little biased, too. :<
Speaking of gamepress and Gramps, I hate their explaination of his middling rank on their tier list
"One of the strongest solo servants", "good damage and fantastic survivability", "monstrously high NP gain per hit"
And yet he's knock down cause "his skill set does not provide any relevant utility" (despite every skill lending to damage, survivability, and his own niche, all things that are super relevant to his playstyle and in general)
"in a class not very suited for damage" (curious how that's not a mark against Kama at all, and goes directly against them calling him one of the strongest of a certain subtype)
And is "heavily reliant on teammates" (you can't be "one of the strongest solo servants" and "heavily reliant" at the same time! I've played Gramps a lot, he is most certainly not incredibly reliant on shit if you know hpw to use him!)
GamePress about Sirfetchād
āPVE Offensive Moves Explanation
CounterĀ andĀ Close CombatĀ allow our brave duck-knight to Fight the wrongs in this world
Fury CutterĀ enables our good Sirfetch'dt to charge its most noble energy more quickly, though it does him no true favors in battle.
Leaf BladeĀ is a worthy attack, but Sirfetch'd is not skilled in its fabled art on offense
Despite the bravery that it always shows within battle,Ā Brave BirdĀ is not Sirfetch'd chosen art.
Night SlashĀ is beneath the good Sirfetch'd noble deeds.
PVE Defensive Moves Explanation
CounterĀ is the fast move that allows Sirfetch'd'sĀ shining onion to obtain honor.
Fury CutterĀ is not an honorable way to defend.
Leaf BladeĀ is the skill that allows Sirfetch'dĀ to defend with honor.
Night SlashĀ is a dishonorable move, but a desperate Sirfetch'd may make use of it in desperate defense
Close Combat and Brave BirdĀ offer no service to brave Sirfetch'dā
Oh man.Ā GamePress apparently updated the offensive tier list to be AR exclusive, and boy have there been some changes.Ā You know I have opinions on this one.
Okay letās start with the obvious part: how in the hell is any Legendary hero considered above Tier 2?Ā Like, are we not factoring in score?Ā Or are we only accounting for if they score well?Ā Because realistically, half the time, a legendary hero is an active detriment to the scoring.Ā Also it turns out this isnāt just offense, but both offense AND defense, since Mirabilis is Tier 1.Ā So thatās gonna be...honestly, a bit confusing.Ā Iām sure some people can tell which is which, but Iām willing to bet others arenāt clear.
Letās start with the biggest changes at the top.Ā Eliwood and Brave Roy are now Tier 1, likely because Galeforce.Ā Nothing else is different that I can tell.Ā Maybe some demotion?Ā But nothing substantial.Ā Lysithea is finally recognized as Tier 1, and Iām certain itās because of her power on AR-D.Ā Girl is obscene.Ā Otherwise, Fallen Julia is the only other T1 Red Mage, and damn good on her.Ā Idunn demoted, but honestly, fair.Ā AR is not for her.Ā Armor units are not hard to handle, and are pretty bad on offense.Ā Especially with Thrasir existing, armor dragons just have a rough go.Ā Spring Idunn and Tibarn alone are T1.Ā What I do find interesting is that Dancer Micaiah didnāt maintain.Ā I guess the Hardy Bearing effect isnāt as impressive anymore.Ā Also Karla stayed T2, thatās...astonishing, actually.Ā Duo Byleth is also T2, which kinda makes sense.Ā Defense canāt make use of her Duo skill, and her bulk is pathetic, so any typical ranged defense unit can handle her.Ā On offense, itās going to be tough.Ā Desperation effect is good, but conditional on having a fast team, not to mention Galeforce sets can require the foe to retaliate, like with Eliwood/Brave Roy.Ā So I canāt say Iām surprised sheās not on top.
Lance seems to just be B!Lucina, Duo Ephraim, and Trio Palla.Ā Which is fair.Ā Blue mages, though?Ā Damn is this crowded.Ā L!Azura and Peony, because obscene dancers.Ā Ophelia, because bitch.Ā Duo Alphonse, because immortality.Ā Brunnya, because honestly Fimbulvetr is perfect for this game mode, and sheās got the infantry status and abilities to do whatever she wants.Ā And L!Julia.Ā Iām willing to bet sheās more AR-D focused.Ā Rafiel and L!Chrom are also T1, of course.Ā I think what really surprises me is that Reinhardt is T2.Ā Is anyone else surprised about this?Ā I guess heās not the most threatening thing in the world anymore, but still.Ā Actually wait, whatās REALLY neat is that Naga is T3.Ā So clearly scoring considerations are not paramount.
Axes have V!Duo Alm, Annette, L!Edelgard, and B!Ike.Ā Because of course.Ā All of them are ridiculous.Ā Mages have L!Celica, Thrasir, and Fallen Lyon, with beasts/dragons having Reyson.Ā Which, again, makes sense.Ā Iām glad Surtr demoted to T2.Ā I really donāt think of him as the most threatening aspect of AR anymore, even on dedicated stall, so this feels overdue.Ā Yuneās also T2, which..okay, fair.Ā While I think sheās great, sheās a ranged flying unit who plays defense, and her debuff game is crippled severely by Eirās bonuses.Ā Itās super weird that F!Kana demoted, though.Ā She was T1 before, and that was entirely based on AR potential, so...okay.Ā Guess the meta has shifted hard enough against her.Ā Also, big shoutouts to Julia for maintaining T2 status.Ā Thatās my girl.
Bows have L!Alm, L!Leif, V!Faye, and Duo Marth.Ā I canāt speak for Duo Marth, I donāt have him, but I feel like the fact Iāve never faced one means heās at least not good on AR-D.Ā I can vouch for V!Faye, though, holy shit.Ā In fact can we establish Tier 0 for the primordial beings that break the world over their knees?Ā Anyway, Bernadetta and B!Lyn are T2, and Iām betting thatās for hit-and-run offense teams.Ā Also Norneās T2 now, which is super correct.Ā Iāve felt this for a while, and the forum backs me up pretty hard on it: Norneās the best common archer by a mile.Ā But of course, you all know what Iām going to say.Ā There is no way Faye is T3.Ā I have played her ranged defense game long enough to know that she is really strong at it.Ā While some threats like Lysithea can blow past her, and Thrasir isnāt always one-shot with my current supports, she is very capable of performing better than T3.Ā Also, poor Clarisse.Ā Finally gets a kickass refine thatās just not particularly great for AR, and instead of climbing the ranks of the offensive tier list, they change the conditions on her.Ā Girl canāt catch a break.
Dagger/Mage combos have, of course, Bramimond, Leila, Eir, and Duo Micaiah.Ā Absolutely no surprises here.Ā What is surprising, maybe just to me, is that Winter Cecilia is down to T3.Ā She was considered T2 for a long while, and Iād guessed that was based on AR potential.Ā I guess Duo Micaiah is causing substantial problems for armors across the board?Ā But man, Larum is T2.Ā LARUM.Ā Larum sucks, what could she possibly be doing thatās useful?
Dragons/Beasts have Fallen Female Corrin, Leanne, Mila, and Velouria.Ā I love everything about this.Ā Leanne makes sense for Defense teams, Velouria is a great Galeforcer, Mila is probably the best Light mythic for supertank strategies, and Fallen Female Corrin makes me happy because Fallen Male Corrin is only T2.Ā Get fucked, loser.Ā Your higher BST does nothing for your shit ass.Ā I do think thereās an argument for Caineghis in T1 for an offensive supertank, but honestly, he struggles.Ā To a degree Iād say heās worse than Faye.Ā We donāt have any beast Mythics, and the only offensive dragon is Mila.Ā His DC is conditional on transforming, and heās an armor unit.Ā He canāt run Null C-Disrupt, or Null Follow-Up like she can, so there are defense teams that can beat him by exploiting this.Ā I feel like Fayeās a lot better, but hey, what do I know.
And finally, staves.Ā Bridal Fjorm is the only one in T1.Ā Brave Veronica actually dropped, which is funny because she was T1 before solely on AR.Ā She doesnāt place in Arena.Ā I guess the meta has shifted away from Brave Veronica lately.Ā I havenāt been scared of one in a long time.Ā And hey, Maribelle is T2 as well, and Forrest got pushed up to T3!Ā Unfortunately, Brave Camilla was reduced to T3, so sheās still below B!Veronica.Ā Which in this game mode I guess is fair.
Now for the opposite end of the spectrum.Ā There are now 6 tiers, which I like.Ā I feel the subdivisions are appropriate, we have enough units that categorization was tough.Ā T4 for lances and swords was like 60 units before, Iām glad it got cleaned up a bit.Ā For red stuff, Alfonse remains at the bottom, but is no longer alone.Ā NY!Camilla, Chrom, V!Conrad, Beach Fiora, Hinata, and NY!Hrid are also down there.Ā Haha, Hrid, get fucked you loser.Ā Thatās for January 2019, you fuck.Ā Mages here include Canas, Julius (ouch), Leo, Beach Leo, Raigh, and Beach Lorenz.Ā No surprises.Ā There are no dragons, daggers, or bows for red down here, the lowest they go is T4.Ā Hysterically, every form of red Tiki is in T4.Ā Also, maybe this is me not understanding something, but NY!Anna and NY!Eir in T4 surprises me.Ā I thought their weapons were considered great team support.Ā Are their stats just not optimized for it?Ā
T6 lances are many.Ā Too many, Iām not listing all of that.Ā What I will say is, tell my Forma Finn running on the double cav Galeforce defense team that heās T6.Ā Considering I only lost two matches at all last season, and only 38 Lift, Iād say heās doing alright.Ā But there are probably better options out there, Iām just working with what I have.Ā Mages are just Oliver and M!Robin.Ā Man, I hope M!Robin goes up with the resplendent.Ā Leave Oliver to die.Ā No dragons, bows, or daggers, theyāre all up in T4 where...where...no.Ā No, thereās no way.Ā Lilith has warp abilities from anywhere.Ā NAESALA is considered T4, despite being paired with Tibarn for some of the nastiest offensive AR-D strategies out there.Ā Mordecai has the Smite thing.Ā I donāt agree with this at all.Ā And Ninian is T3?Ā Even though sheās one of the top picks for Infantry Pulse AR-D dancers?Ā I know Nils exists and is better in every way pretty much, but thatās a bit much to me.Ā I think the blue dragon/beast section is the most ridiculous by far.
There are also a lot of axes down in T6, but I agree with all of them.Ā The green mages make me sad, though.Ā Picnic Leo, Cecilia, and Female Robin.Ā I do think F!Robin has a lot of utility within the game, but...honestly theyāre super right, she cannot possibly compete in AR.Ā Defense teams have no use for her, and offensive teams using her as a support are a bad idea with Panic Manor around.Ā Mostly Cecilia makes my heart hurt.Ā Come on, IS.Ā Null C-Disrupt Raven Tome when?Ā As with the other tiers, all dragons, bows, and daggers of this color are higher ranked.Ā That said, L!Lyn in T5.Ā Get fucked.Ā Thereās also...absolutely nothing controversial about their T4 picks.Ā Greenās pretty well sorted, good job team.
The only colorless option with units in T6 are healers, where we have Azama, Mist, Wrys, Sakura, and Lissa.Ā Nothing controversial here.Ā In fact, nothing controversial in T5, either.Ā What is sad but super true, is that F!Grimaās here.Ā All the other colorless beasts and dragons are clustered in T1 and T2, but sheās down in T5.Ā Expiration refine when?Ā Felicia and Jaffar are the lowest ranked daggers, to no oneās surprise.Ā None of the bows are shocking either, except Iām kinda surprised Niles isnāt at least a little higher.Ā I feel like his massive Res must account for something when attempting to tank out the many ranged magic threats on AR-D, right?
Overall, I...actually agree with the majority of this.Ā Itās a solid tierlist for Aether Raids.Ā There are some things I donāt entirely agree with, but would have trouble arguing in their favor in the current meta.Ā Like Micaiah.Ā As we move entirely away from armor units, Micaiah becomes less and less significant.Ā I do think the blue dragon/beast section could take some revisiting, given that goddamn Naesala is down in T4, but one area that seems off isnāt bad when you have so much to organize.Ā I like it.Ā Definitely a lot better than the previous list, because at least now weāre specialized.Ā Before, there was always an argument that a certain unit was better or worse based on performance in a specific area.Ā But here, itās more stable.Ā Iām not sure if thereās intent to make an Arena one, or if thatās even necessary since scoring is a lot more specific for Arena, but weāll see.
