@garasunohaato replied to your photoset “Dragon Age: Inquisition moodboard”
Could anybody please tell me from what dialogue exactly "I am an elf of the Dalish clans, nothing more." is from? I just can't recall having chosen such an answer before although it's also my Lavellan's mood...
In Val Royeaux, if you talk to the Chantry mother/sister (I forget) who was punched by that templar, it’s a possible part of the dialogue you have with her.

Would you mind telling us about the background you came up with? I'm really curious now~ :3
Sure! It’s not as fleshed out as it could be, just because I’m trying not to lock in too many details before playing the game and seeing how the relationship is scripted to play out, plus whatever might be impossible due to backgrounds and such (I believe they’re supposed to be somewhat customizable, but we’ll see how much that actually means when the game comes out), but this is the idea I’m going with.
Cutting for potential spoilers.
I’m picturing my Ryder as being more of the bookish science-y guy, that Sara got the gung ho military attitude and he got the quieter personality. The two of them get along pretty well, considering each other the one they can rely on most given the Andromeda Initiative consuming most of their lives. They’ll fight and argue like siblings, but they do deeply care and love one another.
The relationship between my Ryder and Papa Ryder, though, I see as strained, a combination of Papa Ryder’s disappointment of his son not following his footsteps with the military (not that Sara didn’t more than make up for it, but the whole ‘my son should be like me!’ deal - again, probably my issues here, with the father and son having conflict), as well as just not understanding the more quiet and introverted child.
I do picture a pretty good relationship with the mother, though, given her absence from the pre-release material, I figure she’s not going to be involved in the game.
That lack of military lifestyle and approach to things is going to keep him pretty casual when it comes to his (inevitable) command style. He’s going to have to tap into the parts of himself that he’s never been comfortable as the Pathfinder - in his mind, if one of the twins were going to take over for their father, it was always supposed to be Sara.
Honestly, that’s kinda why I like the idea that Cora might have some resentment of Ryder effectively leapfrogging the chain of command and becoming the Pathfinder, because he’s going to have the same thoughts going through his mind at the time.
That’s what’s solidified for him so far - again, I don’t want to be too attached to something that the game won’t actually allow, so I’m not putting too much together yet. I haven’t even settled on a name, given that I can’t do Scott, due to a person IRL ruining that name for me. Since I said I might use Chris Evans as a face model, I’m kinda leaning towards Steve (like Steve Rogers). But I’m still debating.
Guilt + Memory for Laryn and Birth + Autumn for Tamlen~
Aahh, thanks so much for asking!! :D
Guilt: Sometimes he still feels guilty for his parents’ death. His magic hadn’t manifested yet (but only just yet) when they died, there was nothing he could have done to save or protect them. It’s also why he generally is very harsh to himself and for a long time in his youth even hated his magic.
Memory: He has a very good memory, almost photographic. He has no difficulties remembering names and faces, also landmarks or old texts or special moments in his life. The downside of this is that he remembers the bad things as clearly as the good ones, and he has a much harder time overcoming bad experiences compared to others.
Birth: He was born on the 6th of Wintermarch in 9:15 Dragon, first child of Velya and Ferian :D
Autumn: He prefers medium warm autumn days over very hot summer days, but the wet cold of an autumn storm is something he can’t stand. Not only does it ring up bad memories, but weather like that also makes some old injuries hurt.
From a very early age on Tamlen has always been around the clan’s halla, since his mother is the halla keeper. One of his earliest memories is sitting on a halla’s back, soft fur between his fingers and the sun shining through the trees - that was a few years earlier though.
When he was 6 his mother started to teach him how to read and write. Since she keeps a breed registry as well as other information on the herd she has to be good at both. No matter whether or not Tamlen might one day success her, so she thought, reading and writing would still be useful skills to have. Tamlen still remembers how they practised writing together, big letters written on a dry spot of earth with a little stick, because paper and ink are too valuable to use them just for practise. That might be a reason why his handwriting never got very neat :D
8. What scent would they be associated with, if any?
I don’t associate him with any scent in particular. He doesn’t wear perfume or anything like that - it seems kinda contraproductive to being a hunter. Dorian probably associates him with the scent of his favourite tea, or the smell of his leather armour, or when he’s been outside outside with the smell of a forest.
12. What’s the Inquisitor’s favorite food?
The one positive thing Tamlen has to admit about Orlais is that some of their food is really really good. He has a bit of a sweet-tooth and loves the little cakes, especially the ones with fresh fruit on top or chocolate :D Other than that he’s not a very picky eater, really loves a particular stew based on a Dalish recipe though, because it reminds him of home.
The promise Tamlen has probably broken the most in his life is “I’ll be careful”. Definitely not because he didn’t mean it, but rather because whenever he promises it things happen that lead him to making rash decisions xD He always is careful, just not as much as he maybe should be. One of the first times he promises it is to his mother when he is an apprentice hunter, and he and the other young hunters leave for a first longer trip to scout ahead and learn how to track certain animals. Along the way Tamlen finds a wild deer that got stuck between two trees with its horns. He speaks to it calmly, approaches it careful, only with the best intentions and wanting to help - but the deer doesn’t know that of course and once free kicks him so that he falls down a small slope covered in thorns and vines and breaks his ankle. He tries to be careful, really... he just has a lot of bad luck sometimes xD
Memories
Tamlen’s earliest memory is being put on the back of a halla by his mother, who is the halla keeper. He still vividly remembers how soft the white fur felt between his fingers and how gently the halla moved not to accidentally throw the little elf off its back :D A lot of Tamlen’s childhood memories revolve around the halla and being around his mother, from an early age on helping to take care of the animals. When he settles down and retires one day (which I really hope he gets the chance to... looking at you Bioware >:[ ) I think he’d start to take care of halla again, maybe taking in injured ones, or just to generally have them around and help preserving and honoring them.
