3 OC Facts

I’ve been tagged by @sunshinemage and @seboostian-art to do this a long time ago, finally getting around to do it now xD

Two tags, so I’m going to do two OCs!

Tamlen Lavellan

He learned how to read and write from his mother at an early age and ever since has been devouring written tales - fact and fiction - about great adventurers and heroes like Garahel or Aveline. While he didn’t get his hands on “Hard in Hightown” or “Swords and Shields” prior to Inquisition, he did read a rather beat-up copy that was missing a few chapters of “The Tale of the Champion” and also few other earlier works of Varric before meeting him.

Tamlen is a bit of a jack of all trades - he’s tried his hand at a lot of different activities, and he’s decent enough at many, but not particularly outstanding. He knows how to fix a lot of things, also through improvising out in the field, from clothing and armour to tools. But, as an example, actually making weapons and armour he leaves to the professionals.

After a pretty horrible accident Tamlen has a great fear of drowning, and particularly the prospect of crossing wide, wild rivers scare him. He is a decent swimmer, and he doesn’t mind swimming in bodies of water that he knows, or that are shallow and clear enough to see the ground. The journey across the Waking Sea to get to Ferelden wasn’t fun though.

Laryn Lavellan

The type of magic that seems to come to Laryn most naturally is ice. The effortlessness at which he can create blizzards of sharp icicles shooting through the air like daggers is definitely intimidating.

As the Keeper’s First he will one day be in charge of conducting the vallaslin ceremonies for the young elves becoming adults. For that purpose he has been practising tattooing since he was in his teenage years, mostly on himself of course. His legs in particular are still covered in his attempts, as most Keepers’ and Firsts’ are, and while many learn spells to remove these old tattoos later in their lives Laryn holds on to them.

Laryn lost his parents when he was twelve. Even though he rejected her as such in the beginning, Keeper Deshanna has eventually become something like a surrogate mother to him, definitely though family.

⌛ A sleep headcanon...

... for Breella: She often has very vivid dreams, and she’s not always sure if they are truly only figments of her imagination, or maybe a bit more. Prophetic visions, potentially, or maybe glimpses at past lives she’s not even aware of?

... for Laryn: He can’t fall asleep when it’s completely quiet outside. In general he doesn’t have anything against a peaceful silence, but for some reason it creates a sense of impeding doom in him when he’s trying to fall asleep. Asking his peers about it it seems to a problem many other members of clan Lavellan seem to share.

💕  A love headcanon...

... for Belben: He doesn’t fall in love often, but when he does, he falls hard and fast, almost becoming a little obsessed with the person that captivates his heart. This initial obsessiveness with last for a few days, to maybe a few weeks, before he can calm down and actually start speaking normal sentences in front of his crush without completely embarrassing himself.

... for Tamlen: After his first big love ended in a slight disaster Tamlen felt for a while as if he would never be able to love again, realizing, as time went on, that he could be absolutely fine with that. After the Keeper allowed him to give up on his hunter duties, instead beginning a late new apprenticeship as the Halla Keeper’s assistant, he was at a point where his life was completely and utterly fulfilled: a work he was passionate about and loved, his family and friends at his side and well, the clan prospering and the world recovered from the turmoil the 5th Blight had brought. He didn’t miss being in love or being in a relationship, and at first he thought it was weird, but then he embraced it fully.

🍯 A food headcanon:

Laryn is a bit of a picky eater, in particular he doesn’t like very salty and otherwise strongly flavoured foods like fish and certain stews. Give the boy his steamed vegetables though and he is happy.

🍬 A family headcanon:

Laryn lost his parents when he was rather young during one of the most severe and traumatizing attacks the clan had to endure in its recent history. His father was a hunter, his mother the clan’s Hahren and storyteller. Since that day Keeper Deshanna was something like a surrogate mother for him, but he actually feels really guilty for slowly forgetting how his real parents looked like.

💕 A love headcanon:

Laryn is a bit of a loner and a late-bloomer, he isn’t very romantic and for the longest time also not particularly interested in relationships. Ever since his parents died and his magic manifested he has been rather emotionally cold - which might be why ice magic is his strong suit from the start. The first time he falls for someone - and he falls hard - is when he’s already in his late teens to early 20s, but he doesn’t dare to act on his feelings until much later even.

Of your OCs, what would they be voted as, if Thedas had such a thing as high school yearbook superlatives?

Okay I have to admit I had to do a quick google search what yearbook superlatives are xD We didn’t have that in school here! But aaahhh okay!!! For some of my Dragon Age OCs:

Tamlen Lavellan: “Most Changed since Freshman year” (or Best Smile, because tbh, yes) - simply because it’s true, Tamlen went through a lot of anger and rebellious phases as a teen that he had really hard to work on and grow out of. He still has a rebellious streak, but he’s learned to control his anger and use it to his advantage, not be controlled by it!

Malanna Lavellan: “Biggest Flirt” probably, or “Best Group Project Leader”! Malanna is rather responsible, always looking out for her friends and motivating them, but not taking any shit from them either. She’s also light-hearted and fun-loving. She’ll also attempt to flirt with almost every pretty lady she sees xD

Laryn Lavellan: “Most Likely to Succeed” definitely. Laryn is very determined and dedicated, competitive even, to a point where it’s sometimes annyoing.

Delas Mahariel: “Most likely to quietly take over the world”. It’s always the quiet ones xD

★ Tamlen is to some degree ambidextrous.

★ Laryn originally felt very resentful about his magic - mainly because it manifested only just too late to protect his family during a bandit attack on the clan. He still blames himself to some degree for his parents’ death.

★ Tamlen was always not quite scared but a little bit intimidated by horses. They are much bigger and, from his perspective, less gentle than the halla he grew up with, so he had a bit of a rough start with them when introduced to them in Haven.

★ Malanna is an excellent archer and eager to become the clan’s next master hunter after her mother.

★ Delas is terrified of heights and really dislikes confined spaces, so he didn’t have the best time in the Deep Roads... and the prospect of one day ending up down there when his Calling kicks in is enough of an incentive to find a cure asap!

I’ve thought about it for a while and I think a lot of the rivalry between Tamlen and Laryn is based on good old envy/jealousy. Laryn envies Tamlen for his loving parents and big happy family, that he has an easy time making friends usually (from Laryn’s perspective at least). His own parents died in a terrible way when he was a kid, he has no siblings or other relatives. The person he’s closest to is the Keeper, but he wouldn’t consider her a parent, more a mentor. Tamlen on the other hand is jealous of Laryn’s magic for one - how it automatically makes him well-respected. He envies his confidence (from his own perspective), and that he’s taken seriously, that he’s that special gifted child Tamlen never really was. They could actually learn so much from each other I think, but are both too stubborn to let go of their grudges for the longest time. Laryn thinks Tamlen is a reckless poser whose influential parents give him priviliges he doesn’t deserve - Tamlen thinks Laryn is an uptight moron who thinks he’s better than the rest of them. Both are fools xD

Eventually things get more relaxed between them though, but it takes a hole in the sky and a life-or-death-situation for the whole clan in Wycome to get things started in the right direction.

Guilt + Memory for Laryn and Birth + Autumn for Tamlen~

Aahh, thanks so much for asking!! :D

Guilt: Sometimes he still feels guilty for his parents’ death. His magic hadn’t manifested yet (but only just yet) when they died, there was nothing he could have done to save or protect them. It’s also why he generally is very harsh to himself and for a long time in his youth even hated his magic.

Memory: He has a very good memory, almost photographic. He has no difficulties remembering names and faces, also landmarks or old texts or special moments in his life. The downside of this is that he remembers the bad things as clearly as the good ones, and he has a much harder time overcoming bad experiences compared to others.

Birth: He was born on the 6th of Wintermarch in 9:15 Dragon, first child of Velya and Ferian :D

Autumn: He prefers medium warm autumn days over very hot summer days, but the wet cold of an autumn storm is something he can’t stand. Not only does it ring up bad memories, but weather like that also makes some old injuries hurt.

❤️ Laryn can be a real grump and he used to be a real butt. He adores strong women who know what they want and who are not afraid to put him in his place. That will make his hard shell crumble almost immediately and reveal a very sappy romantic beneath.
