I don’t know about you but the entrance of a garden always holds a special fascination for me. It sets an expectation for what is to come, creates a mood, can invite you in and make you feel welcome or exactly the opposite. I think of it just as the entrance to a home and find it equally important. This entrance to, what I believe was a private garden somewhere in Devon, England, really spoke to me. It is understated, calm, and very pleasing to the eye. The planting is symmetrical with the two evergreen shrubs cut into giant balls, the two orange/yellow roses providing color and aliveness, and the small spiky plants at the feet of the roses adding a different texture and with that interest. The simple wooden gate framed by the pillars build out of natural stone harmoniously fits into the scene. This entrance is pretty genius even though you only realize it on the second glance once you pick it apart and analyze it in your mind. Good garden design is truly an art form! I hope are hanging in there and are able to find little moments of joy and comfort in nature, a garden, a flower or even an indoor plant!
