ENT. college station, texas. june 21st.
it had been 7 days since your encounter with him. billy. 7 whole days of fantasizing about a complete stranger, in far too intimate of ways for you to stay strangers.
you tossed and turned in bed on a thursday morning, finding yourself thinking of billy, again. he was too perfect, too handsome, too good to be true. you counted yourself lucky that you hadn’t seen him around town while you searched for open job positions.
much to your surprise, you’d gotten yourself an interview with the bar manager at josie’s. on your way there, you half-heartedly hoped billy would be there. maybe he was a regular. maybe this job would give you an excuse to get paid to flirt with him, you thought. it was ridiculous to think about a man you’d only met once this much, sure. but what else did you have to do?
by the time you arrived, the bar was mostly empty, save for the staff and what you presumed were the regulars seated at the counter. the expected crowd for 11:00 am on a thursday afternoon. the interview was brief, a few simple questions about your background, customer service, bartending experience, and hospitality.
“i have one last question for you. can you handle a drunk?”
the woman asked you, a small smile on her face as you laughed before answering, a teasing tone to your voice.
“only since 5th grade, ma’am.”
the two of you stood up as she smoothed out the fabric of her apron.
“well, it looks like you’ve got the job then.”
you expected a longer interview, having to build a more proper resume, but something about the town and the people in it felt different. more comfortable, like home.
“can you start tomorrow?”
you nodded, slinging your purse over your shoulder on the way out. you felt good, accomplished, like things were finally looking up for you. a new place, new job, and the possibility of new friends, and maybe, just maybe, romance.
as you pushed the barn doors of the bar open to head back towards you car, a familiar cowboy found himself bumping into you.
“‘m so sorry, honey. you alright?”
he spoke, picking up your purse that had slid down your arm and settling it back onto your shoulder. his touch against your skin made you burn. you could almost hate him for being so goddamn charming.
“oh don’t worry about it, i’m just fine.”
you shifted your weight onto one foot, suddenly aware of the fact that you had so much skin exposed. he’d only touched you for a brief moment but you found yourself wanting more. it was inappropriate to be thinking about him like this. what would he think about you if he knew?
“you interviewin’ at josie’s?”
his words broke your train of thought. the drawl in his voice echoed in your brain, something you’d save for later.
“just got the job actually. gonna start bartending tomorrow.”
he smiled, putting his hand in the back pocket of his jeans, his shoulder brushing against yours.
“well, look at you. you’re almost a proper texan now.”
“almost?”
“you haven’t been to the rodeo yet, have you?”
“i can’t say i have, billy.”
“you’re in luck then. it’s comin’ to town this weekend, the whole carnival and everything too.”
it would be a dream. to be with him, hold his hand, stare at the way his face looked under the fair lights and hear his laugh the way you’d been dreaming of.
“i might have to get myself a ticket then.”
you smiled, trying to hide your excitement at the prospect of seeing him in another pair of perfectly fitting jeans, a cowboy hat, and that white t-shirt that left you spiraling about what he’d look like without it.
“well, i’ll be bringing a few of the horses to show saturday night and i can bring you with me if you want to get in free.”
oh my god. was he asking you out? was this really happening. no, no, surely he wouldn’t be this forward. not after knowing you for a week. one whole week of yearning inexplicably for a man you knew almost nothing about. your mouth felt dry. you wondered if he could see the gears turning in your head.
“i’d love to, but i’m not sure i’ll be able to get it off, y’know with the new job and everything.”
you cursed yourself instantly. turning him down, seriously? it was the responsible thing to do, of course, but downright pathetic in the same way.
“don’t you worry about that. josie’s a friend of the family so i’m sure she’d be happy to let you loose if you’re comin’ with us.”
he was charming, the type of charm that felt like warm honey and made your heart ache at the idea of him giving it away to anyone else. you wondered if it was just his nature to be this way. you wondered what he saw in you.
“working my boss over before i’ve even started? sounds like the perfect way to make employee of the month.”
“i promise, it’ll be worth it. ransom does rodeos like no one else.”
billy laughed at your sarcasm, tipping his hat towards you. his eyes bored into yours for a moment, drawing you in like an endless field of blooming flowers. so sickeningly sweet you were almost sure he could feel it too.
you wouldn’t be able to process this interaction, his charm, his forwardness until you got home. much less go on an actual date with him. much to your better judgement, you’d agree. just to know more about him, you told yourself.
“so, does this mean you’re free saturday? i can pick you up at seven.”
you could squeal, jump up and down and kiss him in that very moment. the feeling he gave you was like nothing you’d ever felt before, a pure unfiltered sense of longing to know more about him, to feel his skin against yours, to know what it was like to be with him. really, be with him.
“it’s a date, billy.”
his demeanor shifted for a moment as he looked away, something in his eyes that you couldn’t quite decipher. was he getting shy on you? not now, certainly not after he’d made the first move. it was adorable, nonetheless. he leant down towards you, making you so much more aware of the height different between the two of you. you could feel the heat radiating from his skin, the faint smell of cigarettes clinging to the fabric of his shirt.
his voice dropped as he spoke, his hand hesitantly pressed against your lower back. you invited him in, your whole body aflame.
“i’ll see you then, beautiful.”
he pulled back, looking at you once more, taking the sight of you in. flustered, gorgeous, and something new to him entirely. you couldn’t believe your eyes. you had a date with billy. a real date. would you finally be able to make your fantasies a reality? it felt like he read your mind in this very moment, but chose to spare you of the embarrassment that would come of how desperate you felt to be alone with him. so you chose to dilute your excitement, standing on your heels to bring yourself closer to him.
“bye, billy.”
the singsongy tone in your voice blew your cover, but the expression that bloomed across the cowboy’s face made it all worth it.
“bye, darlin’.”
with a wink and a crooked smile, he was gone. you were sure his hand left an imprint on the fabric of your dress, nearly leaving you speechless. you giggled to yourself, hoping he wouldn’t catch it and turn back.
you’d never been so excited for the possibility of the unknown. for the possibility of billy. he was an enigma, ever the sweetheart and full of every ounce of southern hospitality you could ever want. you wanted to learn him, every part. you could only hope he wanted you just the same.
boy what tf you so cute for

ENT. college station, texas. june 14th.
maybe it was cruel and unusual punishment that on the day of move in to your new apartment, in a new state, in a town in which nobody knew you, the heat of the texas summer pushed 105 degrees. if you had a little less pride, and were willing to forego your dignity, you’d have asked for help moving all your life’s belongings into your second story apartment. but, ever the independent girl that you are, you began dragging boxes and bins up the stairs and through the door.
the apartment was nice, spacious, but plain. hell of a lot more space than you could find anywhere on the west coast for the price, you thought to yourself. you’d miss the beaches, the salt air and the fog that came with overcast beach days, but independence has a cost. one tempting enough to move across half the country and start a new life for.
it took you a few hours, an ache in your back, and a change of clothes, but you’d finally managed to fit every box into your apartment, save for your couch. you internally cursed yourself for deciding to keep the old piece of furniture instead of leaving it on the curb hundreds of miles away, but it couldn’t be that hard, surely.
the task may have proved harder than it seemed in hindsight. you made an internal note to self, ditch the couch if i ever move again and avoid dragging an oversized sofa up 2 flights of stairs and around narrow corners. you sighed, letting go of the couch for a brief moment at the top of the stairs before it slipped out of your grip and began making a embarrassingly loud descent. god, you hoped this wouldn’t be the first impression your neighbors had of you.
instead of the scolding from a downstairs neighbor you were expecting, came a voice from across the street.
“miss, let me help you!”
miss? if you weren’t so embarrassed you could’ve found it in yourself to laugh at the stereotypical southern hospitality. as long as he doesn’t call me missus, you thought.
“i’m alright, really, i just lost my grip-”
before you could finish speaking, the couch was up the stairs in an instant, forcing you to move to the side as it slid to a stable position outside your door. you wanted to be offended, but couldn’t help but smile at the demeanor of the boy who’d came to stop you from making a fool of yourself on the first day of your new life.
you leaned back against the door as the man came into view, wiping his palms on the front of his worn out jeans.
“well, thank you for that. guess you could tell i was a little too ambitious from all the way over there, couldn’t you?”
you spoke, looking back over your shoulder to the street he stood moments ago, finding an older man with his arms crossed leant against a beat up pickup. you earned a laugh out of him, and suddenly heat spread across your face at the sound. because god, he was handsome.
“it’s my pleasure. besides, my father would never forgive me if i saw you struggling and didn’t help.”
oh, so that’s who that is. you shot the man a smile as he tipped his hat towards you and-
“i’m billy, by the way. i’m assuming you’re new around here?”
the boy took his hat off, head tilted waiting for an answer. it was almost like something out of some cheesy cowboy romance movie, you thought. he was tanned, a soft shade of pink across his cheeks, probably from working out in the heat all day. his hands were darkened with dirt, maybe grease. and the white t shirt he wore clung to his chest in a way that made you curse yourself for thinking these things about a stranger.
“you’d be correct. i just made the drive here from california, actually. looking for a fresh start.”
he smiled, his hand rubbing the back of his neck as you toyed with a piece of your hair.
“well, if you’re looking for a job or some locals who might be able to help you out i think josie’s might be a good place to start.”
he, billy, gestured to the bar that sat on the corner of the town square. it was quaint, clearly an old saloon that had been remodeled for a more modern feel.
“i think i just might, as soon as i get all this unpacked.”
you pushed the door open, a small smile on your face as billy glanced over the piles of boxes that sat in your apartment. the air was heavy, heat waves hanging and making their way into your door as billy shifted on his heel in front of you.
“y’know, my father and i work down at the ransom ranch, just a few minutes down the road, so if you need any help around the apartment or looking for jobs i’d be happy to help.”
his offer made you blush, and you hoped he’d chalk it up to the heat getting to you. he was a sweetheart, of course. tall, handsome, strong, something out of a dream you had. it was foolish to feel like such a teenager over a man you’d met minutes ago but you couldn’t help it. certainly not with a face like his.
“you sure are sweet, you know that?”
billy smiled, genuine, warm, real. all the things you craved and adored and wished for. he smoothed the blonde streaks of hair away from his forehead before speaking again.
“‘m just doing what my father taught me, is all.”
he was a picturesque cowboy, chivalrous and wrapped in flannel. you had to stop yourself before you got ahead.
“well, i guess i’ve got the rest of my day cut out for me but i hope i’ll see you around, billy.”
“you too, darlin’.”
before you could make a rebuttal, shake your head or sigh like a lovesick puppy, he turned around, his hat settling back on his head as he made his way down the stairs. he was even better from the back, you thought.
you pushed the couch into your apartment, finally shutting the door and getting a glimpse of air conditioning for the first time in hours. you sighed as you sat down, throwing your head back. was that real? was he real? you thought for a brief moment you might have made him up, imagined and pieced together from old westerns you watched as a child. but no, he was there. you slid open the blinds, watching his truck pull away and down the street.
you smiled to yourself, his name hanging in the air. billy.
