For hundreds of years, war raged across the world. Humans could not accept that they were not the final stage of evolution. Their delusions of being top of the food chain were forever shattered. There was something faster, stronger, hungrier than they were.
Werewolves.
Humans might have outnumbered them at first, out powered them even, once they learned the weaknesses of their enemies. But the werewolves still prevailed, winning the cities the world over. Humans retreating to small patches of land where they would be left alone, their numbers dwindling further since they no longer had their technology they relied so heavily on.
None but a few had seen a human in a century. Most figured they were finally extinct, and the world was theirs completely.
Garth stopped, turning and looking around. His golden eyes shone, the animal he had been tracking forgotten. Head tilted back, snout in the air, he took a deep breath and turned towards it. Slowly, he moved.
A large brown wolf cut into his path, a low growl, and then a growl came from behind. Turning, he saw the grey wolf, only just smaller than its litter mate in front of him, moments before it slammed into Garth’s side.
“Jesus!” Garth yelled, now in his human form, the grey wolf on top of him. “What the hell, Dean?”
Another face came into view, long brown hair spilling down around it. “You can’t just leave the pack while we hunt. You let it get away!”
“Sorry.” The wolf sitting on his chest puffed out a breath into Garth’s face through its nose. He knew if Dean had been in human form, he’d be scowling. “I said I’m sorry. I smelt something.”
“Better than deer?”
Garth nodded. “I never smelt anything like it.”
Dean turned, sniffing at the air and jumped off Garth. His snout to the ground, he soon took off. “He’s got the scent again. Lets go, its almost morning.” Sam shifted, and the large brown wolf followed his brother.
Garth looked around, hoping to catch the new scent again, but when he heard a howl, he shifted and followed.
“Garth?”
“There it is again.” he was turning on the sidewalk, trying to find where it was coming from.
“What?” Sam looked around confused.
“That’s scent.. from the woods the other night.. it’s here.”
Furrowing his brow, Sam began trying to find it, but he couldn’t find anything unusual. “I don’t smell anything..”
“It’s close…”
“Maybe our little pack runt finally has a mate!” Dean grinned putting an arm around Garth and rubbing his knuckles into the smaller man’s hair.
“There!” he shoved Dean off of him, and pointed across the street. Her bright red hair flew up as she spun her head towards them. Seeing the pointed finger, her eyes went wide and she ran. “Wait!”
Garth hurried across the street, but she was long gone from his sight by the time he got there. “Something’s not right about her..” Sam mumbled.
“Why do you say that?”
“You smell anything?” Dean shook his head. “She’s obviously not an alpha. I can smell every other omega in 30 feet, but got nothing from her.”
“Could be beta. Or on suppressants.”
“I’d still smell something.” he looked to his brother. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say she’s not one of us..”
“Garth can smell her. So she’s something.” Dean shrugged. “Maybe she was just out of your range.”
“But in Garth’s?”
“He does have the better nose.”
“Maybe..” Sam hummed. “I still say something’s off about her..”
You ran. As fast as your legs could take you, you ran. Your red hair flew around as you turned to see if you were being followed. Not that it mattered much, you knew you’d never out run him, but you still checked. Out of the city limits, into the woods you ran. Jumping over tree roots, through the stream. By the time you skidded to a stop, and burst into the long forgotten hunting cabin, you were out of breath. “What happened?!” The oldest of your little brothers, Wendell who was barely past eleven, jumped up.
“I was spotted…” You shook your head, hands on your knees and doubled over your tried to catch your breath.
“We have go again?” The youngest pouted as he looked up from the small wooden toy he played with. Ollie was four.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know how it happened… I was careful, I’m always careful..” You looked up at your brothers. “We need to go before they tell the others..”
“Maybe it’ll be okay, maybe-” The oldest of the two glanced around the room, as if the answers were there.
“They killed our whole town!” You reminded him. “Mom, Dad, everyone. I’m not losing you two! I’m not taking that chance! I barely got you both out last time… I can’t outrun them. I’m sorry, but we need to go. Tonight. We have enough food for a week, if we’re careful.” They both nodded somberly. “For now, sleep. Both of you. You’ll need the rest for later.”
Garth walked out of his apartment that evening, not caring that he stood on the street he had last smelt that scent in his bare feet and sweatpants. He looked towards where she ran, the girl with the red hair and the intoxicating and unusual smell. He made his way up the street a few feet before shifting and heading off, trying to find some trace of it.
‘Why did she run? Where would she go?’ His mind running as his paws kept moving. The only real sound he heard was the clicking of his claws on the pavement, and the rare car in the distance. He thought back to where he had first smelt it. ‘The woods? Would she have gone back there?’ Breaking into a run, he was on his way out of the city.
“Mama..” Ollie whined, and you shushed him. After watching your parents die months ago, at first he wouldn’t say a word. And then, it was just Mama. He slowly started talking again as you began carving him toys, like your father once had, but Mama stuck, and that’s what he called you now. “Mama, I hear something.”
You froze, looking around. Wendell placed himself so Ollie was between the two of you as you both looked around. “I don’t see anything..” He whispered.
You gasped as a light brown wolf came into view, pushing the two boys farther back and behind you. “Wendell.. You remember what to do?”
He nodded, not that you saw. “Run as fast as I can with Ollie, find somewhere to hide. Stay hidden for three days if you don’t come back for us.” He whispered it. “Try and find a new town. Daddy said there was one north of here.”
“Good boy.” You whispered, keeping yourself between the wolf and the kids as it circled you, sniffing at the air. “You remember how to find north?”
“Yes.” Ollie answered for him, and Wendell added in his ‘Yes’.
“Good.. Run. Now!”
Suddenly the wolf shifted. “Wait! I won’t hurt you!” But both boys took off running. He held up his hands as he stood there, stark naked. “I swear, I won’t hurt you.”
“Why are you hunting us then?”
“I’m not. I smelt you in the woods a while back. Then again in the city. I’ve never smelt anything like you before. I’m curious. I swear, I mean you no harm. And I’m alone.”
“Wolves are never alone. Especially not when hunting.”
“Not hunting.” He told you again. “I came out looking for you, trying to figure out why you smell so different from everyone else.”
“I-” You bit your bottom lip. He was small in build. Most werewolves were much bigger than him from your limited experience. Runt of the litter, you figured. He seemed genuine, there was curiosity in his eyes, so he wasn’t lying about that. “I’m human.”
“You’re… That’s not possible. They don’t exist anymore.”
“We do.. There’s just not many of us left..”
“Why are you out here? Are there more of you?” He looked around and you shook your head.
“Hunters wiped out my town. We’re the only three who got out alive that I know of. Please, just let me get my brothers. We’re leaving the area…”
“Hunters?” He furrowed his brow. “Like-”
“Like a pack of wolves who spend their lives hunting down humans.” you swallowed. “Please, Ollies only 4. Don’t tell anyone we were here, or where we went. Give him a shot at a life. Please.” You teared up.
“I won’t tell anyone.” He promised with a shake of his head. “Why would people be hunting humans..”
“Because that’s how the war started, but with humans hunting werewolves. They want to end it how it started, for good.” He gave you a small nod, processing this. “Can I go? I need to find them, get them out of here.”
“Yeah..” He nodded. You started heading in the direction Wendell had run in. “Wrong way.” You turned back to him, confused. “They got turned around.” He pointed off to his right. “Smells like they’re headed along the stream to the lake. Smart kid, there’s a small cave under the little waterfall there.” You looked in the direction he had pointed in and started towards it. “Mind if I come with, make sure you’re all safe?”
“I gu-” Before you could even finish, she was in wolf form again, padding along beside you. “I guess.”
He lead you to them, you found them sitting by the lake, catching their breath. “Mama!” Ollie screamed, pointing to the wolf that stopped by a tree, keeping plenty of space between them and him.
“It’s okay, Ollie.” You scooped him up into a hug and turned to the wolf. “Thank you.”
He gave you a little yip, and began moving around the space. You ushered the kids into the cave behind the waterfall to let them rest. You didn’t plan to stay, but he was right, they needed it. They were tired from running. And Wendell had barely slept. Once he seemed satisfied, he looked at you once more before he wandered back out of sight, and you sighed before joining the boys behind the waterfall.
Garth shook off the weird feeling he had, and stepped out of his office to call in his next patient. He shared a practice with his long time friend, and pack mate, Castiel. Cas was a doctor, and Garth a dentist. He saw someone at the front desk talking to Cas he had never seen before. When Cas started back towards his own office, Garth hurried over. “Who was that?”
Cas shrugged. “From out of town. Looking for someone.”
“Who?”
Cas shook his head. “A girl, two kids? Said I’d have known if I saw her. Bright red hair.” Garth’s eyes went wide. “What? What is it?” Garth tossed aside the white lab coat he wore over his scrubs and was gone out the door. “Garth!” Cas hurried to the door and looked out, but Garth had shifted and took off. Collecting his friends clothes, he headed back in. “Hey Dolores? Can you get the Winchester Garage on the line for me? I’ll take it in my office.”
She nodded and dialed as he headed into his office. “Hey Cas, what’s up?” Sam’s voice came through when Cas picked up.
“Garth. What’s going on with him? People were in here looking for some red haired girl, and he took off. Shifted and everything.”
“Shit.. Dean! I told you something was wrong with that girl he kept smelling!”
“What? What the hell is going-”
He was cut off by Dean’s voice now on the line. “We’ll be right there.” Then it went dead.
You had just finished eating, Wendell helping with Ollie, when you heard a sound off in the woods. Turning towards it, you stood and dusted crumbs off your lap. “We got to go.” you turned to Wendell. “I’ll grab Ollie, you take his bag, okay?” Wendell nodded, and quickly slung his brothers bag over his shoulder along with his own.
You threw yours on, so it crossed your chest, and as you picked up Ollie and turned to leave, you found yourself surrounded by a pack of black wolves. The dark fur that seemed to swallow up any light that shone on it, haunted your dreams. The last time you had seen it, was when your home burned to the ground as you ran with your brothers.
“Mama?” Ollie was scared, understandably so. And so were you. Wendell, though shaking, pulled out the small knife he had used to cut Ollie’s fruit not fifteen minutes earlier.
“Oh, this little one has some balls on him.” You turned, towards the voice. The scars that crisscrossed his face became more visible as he moved closer. You focused on the one that went along his right cheek. Your mother had given him that as she fought him off so you could grab your brothers from upstairs. You swallowed, clinging tight to Ollie. But he just smiled at you. “Been looking for you for a long time, Red.” He tilted his head and stood a few feet away. Reaching his hand out to brush his fingers along your cheek, you quickly stepped back out of his reach, stopping next to Wendell. He scoffed. “Kill the welps. We’ll have some fun with her before she dies too.” he snarled.
You heard the low growl as they started moving closer, slowly, stalking. “I’m sorry.” You muttered quietly. To Wendell, to Ollie, to your dead parents. “I’m sorry I couldn’t keep you safe.”
“Mama..” Ollie cried against your shoulder.
“I’m sorry.” You held him as tight as you could, tears running down your cheek because you knew there was no way out of this. You couldn’t out run them, there was nothing to distract them while you slipped away this time.
Then he was there. His light brown coat almost golden in the sunlight, like a dog you had seen in an old picture book. He was between you, and them, his head low and a deep growl that didn’t quite seem to fit with his size.
The man chuckled. “What? Going to fight your own kind over some human.” He spat out the word, watching to see what the wolf would do, but it didn’t move. It didn’t stop it’s low growl, snapping when one of the black wolves stepped closer. “How is a little shit like you even an Alpha? You gonna take us all on by yourself? The little whelping with the knife stands a better chance than a runt like you.”
Suddenly two more wolves joined the one in front of you. A large grey one took a stand right next to him, but the massive brown one got in front of Wendell, keeping the boy on his right side and ready to attack anything that moved closer.
Then more appear along the edges of the clearing. Wolf after wolf growling and ready to attack the pack that threatened you. Then a man came out, impossibly large white wolf at his side. He came over to you, getting right in your face, looking deep in your eyes. Then he smelt you. “Human. Haven’t smelt fear like that since I was a pup myself..” You were shaking, looking around. “This is Castiel.” He ran his fingers over the white wolf. “He’s going to get you somewhere safe.”
“She’s my prize.” He man in black growled. “My hunt. Who are you to-”
“She’s protected by the Winchester Clan.” He turned from you and towards the man. “You have no right to be here.”
“She’s nothing to you.”
“She’s his mate.”
“She’s human, it’s forbidden-”
“It was, once. Winchesters do not follow the old ways. Leave this land, leave this city behind or you will be dealing with me.”
The white wolf nudged at your hip, walked a few feet, then turned to you and waited for you to follow. You grabbed Wendell, and followed. No argument. It could be a trap, sure. But if you stayed here, you’d be dead for sure.
“Hey! Hey!!” The man in back stepped forward as he yelled after you.
“You were warned.” You turned back as he shifted, teeth bared as he shook off the clothes that had ended up draped on his frame.
He was big, not as big as the white wolf, or the brown one, but big nonetheless. His coat a mixture of brown, black and grey. The man’s eyes went wide for a moment, and then he smirked. “It will be an honor to kill the famous John Winchester. Maybe I’ll fuck her on your coat after.” He shifted as well, and you watched as the wolves all charged each other.
Castiel moved around you, and used his body to push you along. “But-” He did it again, and again. “Okay… okay..” Holding Wendell’s hand tight, you followed the wolf back into the trees and away from what you were sure was carnage behind you.
You sat quietly in a large but quaint house, waiting. Wendell and Ollie both asleep on the couch holding each other. “Here.” You looked up, and Castiel smiled and held out a mug for you. “It’s just tea.”
“Thank you.” You held it in your hands, letting it warm you, but you just stared into it. “You’re smaller than I expected…”
He chuckled. “Yeah, I get that a lot if people see my wolf form first. People also expect an Alpha.” You looked up at him. “Omega.” He smiled softly.
“I also thought werewolves could only shift on the moon.. So what do I know.”
He nodded. “Use to be that way once upon a time. If you read that in an old book, you’d be right. We’ve evolved, it never stops, you know. Soon it will be something else, something better than us, and it’ll take over.” He gave you a soft smile. “We don’t fear it. Not like humans did.” You nodded, and took a sip of your tea. “They your pups?” You looked up questioningly. “Sorry, children?”
You shook your head. “My brothers. They were all I could save when that pack attacked our town.”
“John won’t let them near you again. I promise, you can rest. Sleep, if you want. I’ll watch over you.” You shook your head. “Yeah, I don’t think I’d be able to sleep either, honestly.” He sat in one of the other chairs, and you both watched the door.
When it finally opened what seemed like hours later, you jumped up, knocking your tea cup to the floor, spilling the last few drops. “Is he okay?” You hurried over to take in the small guy who risked his life for you.
“Garth’ll be fine, sweetheart.” You looked up at the 6 foot man who all but carried him.
“Garth..” You breathed out his name as they moved past and got him on the couch.
“I’m Dean. That Sasquatch is my brother Sammy, and you met my father, John.”
“Sam. Call me Sam.” He gave you a soft smile as he practically carried in his father.
You bit your bottom lip, worry etched all over your face. “Don’t you worry about me, sweetheart.” John smirked. “I’m just getting too old for this. Give it a day or two and I’ll be right as rain. Cas, any trouble?” He asked as more people piled into the house, you figured they were the other wolves you had seen. A few had minor injuries but were ignoring them for the moment.
Cas shook his head as Dean pulled him into a hug. “No, Sir. The children are a little underfed, but otherwise healthy and uninjured. I’m fine, Dean. How about you, are you hurt?”
“I’m good.” Dean smiled, breathing him in. “I’m good. Just needed my mate.”
You got down on your knees in front of Garth and he gave you a weak smile. “I’m fine. I’m tougher than I look.”
“I hope so, you don’t look very tough.” He laughed at that, then groaned, hand going to his side. You lifted up the shirt he was wearing and saw there was a gash, partially healed, but it was taking it’s time.
“You shouldn’t have done that. You shouldn’t have risked your life for us.. You don’t know us, you don’t owe us anything.. We aren’t even the same species..”
“You might be his mate.” Sam answered, sitting on the floor and putting himself at your eye level. “I couldn’t smell you until today, when I smelt your fear. Garth here has been able to smell you from a distance. An impressive distance, actually, even for him.”
“You smell beautiful.” Garth smiled.
“That’s how I knew Cas was my mate.” Dean grinned, his arm around Castiel’s shoulders. He leaned his head so his nose was against the side of Cas’s head and he took a deep breath. “Best thing I ever smelt in my life. I can’t get enough.” He growled, and nipped at Cas’s ear, laughing when the smaller man pushed him away.
“It’s not unheard of.” John piped up. “Just, really fucking rare. And that was even before the war, before humans became rare.”
You looked up at Garth, taking him in. While not large, he had protected you with his life. And he seemed strong, just skinny. “Mama?” You looked over at Ollie, who was looking around wide eyed from the couch he had fallen asleep on with Wendell. “Dis new home now? We find it?”
“If you want it, kid.” John answered. “I meant it when I said the clan would protect you.” John was looking at you now.
“I’d love for you to stay, get to know you.” Garth reached out and tucked a strand of red hair behind your ear.
You nodded. “My name’s Y/N, but people mostly call me Red.”
“Suits you.” He teased, motioning to your hair.
“Mary!” John called out, making Wendell snap awake, almost falling off the couch and taking Ollie with him. “We got guests! Children!”
An older woman hurried out, her face lit up when she saw them. “Oh you poor things look hungry! Come, I’ve got pie, do you boys like pie?”
“You made pie?” Deans face lit up as he shoved Cas aside and headed for the kitchen, Ollie ran, laughing and squealing as he hurried past Dean. “Hey, kid! I get the big slice, alright, don’t you touch that pie!”
“We safe here?” Wendell looked around wearily, and you nodded. “Promise?”
“Pinky promise.” You held out your finger, and he hooked his with it before following Mary into the other room.
“Hey! What did I say about that pie!”
“Relax, Dean, there’s another one. I have you for a son, do I ever just make one?”
“But mom, that ones pecan.” He whined.
Cas laughed. “See, this is why we don’t have children yet.” He spoke to John, motioning towards the kitchen and John laughed.
