Mark Dapin finds out who is trying to make the Village People deader than disco in You Can't Stop the Murders.
Many of us, at some time, have fantasised about murdering the Village People. Director Anthony Mir's fine new Australian comedy,You Can't Stop the Murders, is a movie about a man who lives out that dream.
You Can't Stop the Murdersis set in West Village, where the last big news story was the local butcher trying to pass off regular grade mince as "premium". It stars comedians Gary Eck and Akmal Saleh as two country town cops investigating a serial killer who targets first a biker, then a construction worker, then a sailor ... almost as if the killer is targeting the members of mega-group the Village People.
Saleh plays Constable Akmal, a good-natured, dim-witted, balding police officer who passes the long hours at the speed trap coming up with appalling ideas for movies. His least inspired concept is a script about an inarticulate man with talking sperm.
Akmal's partner, Constable Gary (Eck), is a good-natured, dim-witted, balding police officer who tries to cover up his scalp condition with spray-on hair. He is in love with the local TV reporter (Kirstie Hutton), but is as hopeless at courting her as he is at detective work. His prime suspect for the murders is the butcher, because he has access to "a big knife".
Saleh and Eck co-wrote the script with Mir. All three agree that the two lead roles are extensions of the comedians' own personalities.
YOU CAN'T STOP THE MURDERS Director Anthony Mir Stars Gary Eck, Akmal Saleh, Anthony Mir, Steve Abbott, Kirstie Hutton, Dave Collins, Shane Dundas
