Just like Gaston and Beast are foils to each other, Lefou and Gaston are as well. It was likely that Lefou saw that Gaston was like him (theoretically Gaston may have went through an awkward or ugly phase as a child) but was broodier, and Lefou himself was probably more of a victim of peer abuse than Gaston, because, again - Gaston's facial expressions probably gave people a bit of hesitation, and Lefou was a much easier, wimpier target. - However, at the point where Gaston broke his shell and became more formidable, he and Lefou were going through the phase where, though similar, one of them was bound to become something more than the other. Gaston’s “destiny” of sorts, as the one to bifurcate the path, became increasingly clear; and from an early age, if cowering and letting himself get beat up is evidence enough, Lefou had likely resigned himself even as a child to the fact that he would always be a certain way, would never be handsome or strapping, and would always be awkward, annoying but generally harmless. And that was ok. Because he had Gaston to look up to - figuratively and literally - and admire in spite of physical imposition. Hence the lyrics, Every guy here’d love to be you, Gaston Even when taking your lumps Truth be told, if Gaston wasn’t around, Lefou wouldn’t have anywhere to go. - As a child, Lefou had likely been noticing Gaston from afar, singling him out as the one friend he really wanted to make, and for the longest time had wanted to approach him, but was afraid that he’d get his head bit off, or that Gaston would want nothing to do with him any more than he did everyone else. And at the point where Gaston interfered and saved Lefou’s *ss - probably chasing off the pack of kids who would have given him his *ss-whipping - it was then, having been so desperate to have a friend, but singularly Gaston, Lefou was ecstatic to finally have some acknowledgment from him and felt indebted to repay him for it. - Gaston by turn, silent but disgruntled, somewhat empathized. But because he’d begun to feel entitlement to things, he appointed Lefou as his personal lackey. - Neither of them had any friends. So why the hell not? At least Lefou wants to do something for him. Years go by, and Lefou becomes the punching bag, happy to carry all of the luggage.
