The discord thought that Buck's post-breakup baking would go viral on TikTok, so this silly little thing was born.

Not only does baking take Buck's mind off Tommy, but it also brings him a lot of joy and satisfaction. He finds that he really enjoys baking. Apparently, other people enjoy him baking as well. 

The comments on his most recent videos have been… a lot. They range from “It’s good to see a young man learning valuable skills!” to “I’d love you to eat me for dessert.” 

Comments like the latter have been getting out of hand, actually. After just a week of posting daily, they take up half of Buck’s comment section. Buck decides to address it in his next voiceover. 

“Bake apple strudel with me while I talk about my last relationship. Hey everyone, I’m so glad you all enjoy my videos. I appreciate the enthusiastic compliments, but some of them have been a little bit too enthusiastic for my taste. I just wanted to let you know that I just got out of a relationship. He and I dated for six months, and it ended pretty suddenly, so I’m not looking for anything new right now. Thank you so much for your support, and check out that golden flaky crust!”

When they arrived at the location of the fire, a few other houses were already present. He hopped out of the truck, his boot-laden feet landing with a heavy thud, and sought to find the Incident Commander. He didn't have to look very far. No sooner than he exited the truck, he was greeted by a familiar face that made his heart plummet into his stomach. "Thank you all for being here, station 217," Captain Bobby Nash said, smiling at all of them but nodding his head toward Tommy. "Kinard." His voice was firm and direct as always, but pleasant. Tommy had been expecting anger or resentment or derision, but found none in his tone. "I'm Captain Nash, the Incident Commander for this fire. We've got a quick-spreading fire on the west side of the hiking trail. We've located what we believe is the location the fire started but are still searching for the cause, so if you see something, say something." Captain Nash quickly handed out assignments, and the 217 got moving. All Tommy could hope was that Bobby had sense enough not to send him to the same location as Evan.

I'm SO close to finishing this post-breakup TikTok fix-it fic. Once I get the thanksgiving turkey in the oven I should have time to write it :D

“Bake sourdough with me while I tell you what it’s like to try something new. I’m gonna be real with you – it’s terrifying as shit. This is my first time baking sourdough, and I’m terrified I’ll get it wrong. Even though it doesn’t really matter, does it? Like, if I mess this up, I can just do it again. What’s even more terrifying is trying something for the first time that you can’t mess up. That’s why you have to train at the academy before becoming a fire fighter - better to mess up when the lives at risk aren’t real than when they are. In life, there are no practice rounds. Sometimes you screw up and the people in your life forgive you and let you back in. But sometimes they leave. In my past relationships, things always seemed to go wrong when I tried something new. Maybe that’s why small things like baking sourdough terrify me so much. It wouldn’t be a life-altering, relationship-ending mistake, but it could be. But that’s life, right? So every day, I’ll try something new. And I’ll keep trying new things until they’re a little less terrifying. Until then, I’ll keep baking for you all. I've been writing chapter 3 of These Ruptures We Make Right. Here is a snippet!

If there was one thing that the lab explosion had proven, it was that Tommy, for all his efforts, couldn't resist Evan. That, and the 118 was invincible*. But Tommy already knew that. He hadn't expected that the next time he heard from Evan would be for an emergency. For days before the call he had been fretting over how he would eventually turn the man down when he inevitably reached out. Evan would text him something like "Meet me at The Otis for a beer?" And Tommy would say no. Things hadn't ended well the last time they were drinking together. Or maybe Evan would say, "Want to take a walk in Elysian Park?" And Tommy would decline. Seeing him at a park is what had gotten him into this mess in the first place. Tommy had been weak, at the fire at Griffith Park, and agreed to talk things out before he was ready. The trick was letting Evan down gently. The whole, "it's not you, it's me" routine. Hiding what he really meant. I'm scared to take more chances on you.

*Although the chapter has references to 8x15, there is no MCD in this fic :) Everybody lives!

Eddie arrives at the coffee shop first. Only a few people are there at this time of day, so he doesn’t have to wait in line. “One black coffee and one matcha latte with almond milk,” he tells the barista.

Yeah, he knows Tommy’s order. Knows he doesn’t drink coffee. So what? They’re good friends.

“Any cream or sugar?” the woman behind the counter asks.

“No-” he hesitates. Do something that brings you joy. “Uh, actually, one vanilla creamer. Thanks.”

By the time the order is ready and Eddie sits down, Tommy has arrived. Eddie offers him the paper cup, which Tommy accepts with a grateful nod as he takes his seat.

“Mm, that hits the spot,” Tommy remarks. “So what’s up? Something happen with Chris?”

Eddie laughs a bit at that. Their phone call this morning after Buck left hadn’t lasted more than three minutes. It was, “Hey Chris,” and “Hey,” followed by an awkward silence, then Eddie telling him he was coming to Texas for Thanksgiving, and then done.

Here's a brief snipped from chapter 2 of "These Ruptures We Make Right," my post-8x11 angst with a happy ending bucktommy fic

Tommy's problem is that he always runs. It didn't start out as a problem: he began running track and field at age 11. He didn't really have the physique for it, but he was decent, and he pushed himself, and his coaches appreciated that. Running made him strong and resilient. But at 17, he ran away from home to enlist in the army when he could no longer stand to suffer the cruelty of his father's words. For over a decade, he ran away from himself, his true self, by dating women and proposing to Abby. Running used to make him tough, but now it just makes him a coward. A coward who can't face his reality head-on, who buries his emotions deep just to avoid what might hurt. And now he's running away from Evan Buckley. Again.

The tears spring into Buck's eyes, unbidden. I miss you, he thinks. The feeling is so strong it's like a hand reaching inside him, twisting up his insides, threatening to choke him with his own grief that's rising like bile.

His finger covers over Tommy's contact. He contemplates sending a text with those three words. Putting the ball in Tommy's court. Seeing if he misses him, too.

But he thinks better of it. Tommy's message that night was loud and clear: he doesn't want to see him anymore. Buck shouldn't disrespect his wishes by reaching across the distance that has grown in the weeks (or has it been months?) since the break up.

His head falls back on the couch, and he stares at the ceiling, barely registering the falling tears.
