2015 Game Developers Conference Recap and Beyond
I know I’m late to be writing a recap of my experience at GDC (Game Developers Conference) but I’ve been swamped since coming back from San Francisco. Right away I picked up a contact working with Karo - a branding agency in Calgary working 4 days a week. Needless to say working on games has taken a bit of a back seat but I’ve still managed to make progress and I’ve got some super exciting things coming up.
GDC was an amazing and exhausting experience. The level of talent that all comes together in one place is inspiring. The talks are awesome and informative, the people you meet are super friendly and nice. Travelling alone to the event was an interesting experience since you really have to put yourself out there to meet people. Introducing yourself is actually pretty easy since everyone there shares a common interest in games. Most of the after parties that required a RSVP, a ticket, or having your name on the guest list were actually really cool about letting you in so long as you left them a business card.
To sum up my best experiences from GDC:
- Independent Games Summit talks were awesome! Very informative.
- Humble Bundle Towerfall Party
- Nordic Games Party
- IGDA (International Game Developers Association) Meetup
- Meeting awesome people from Rovio, EA, Bioware, Valve
- All of the Independent Games Festival nominee games
- Being interviewed on the expo floor RE: the state of indie games
I think going with a group would be a good experience however if you don’t have someone to go with don’t let that stop you. I met some great people that I hope to see at future conferences/events.
Since GDC, my plate has been full:
- I gave a talk at the local Calgary Game Developers monthly meet up about my experience
- Started working on my new game tentatively named Project Jump
- Exhibiting my first Unity game AsterVoid at an event called GDX in Edmonton tomorrow (I’m sitting in a hotel room in Edmonton as I write this)
- AsterVoid was accepted to be apart of the Tournament Arcade at Bit Bazaar 5 in Toronto
- I released AsterVoid for anyone and everyone to download and play!
- I’m planning a indie game tournament in Calgary called the Indie Game Bash on June 6th.
- Picked up tickets to go to Pax Dev/Pax Prime at the end of August
Soooo.. yeah. Things have been crazy, but I’m feeling wildly fulfilled by the work I’ve been doing. I can’t wait for what else is to come this year!
