My Country Is Having An Election And There Could Be Race Riots

Just a notice that for my safety I’m liveblogging it. The process happened today, and right now the votes are being tallied and things don’t look good for anyone.

Some context. In 1969, the incumbent Barisan Nasional (BN) government lost a large majority of seats in the key state Selangor. One thing led to another and the majority Malay population were told that the minority Chinese were here to ‘steal the country’. Red bandana-wearing men with machetes gathered at the UMNO (chief party of the BN coalition) headquarters of Selangor and started marching through the streets, killing and looting and burning. At the end of it, numbers by both the government and British post-colonial censuses put it at hundreds of dead, possibly more than a thousand. It became known as the May 13 Incident and all mention of it was removed from public curriculum and media, then blamed on the Chinese for ‘inciting’ their own murder.

It has been used since as a threat, both openly said and implied, to keep the incumbent in power, but the people do not forget the weeks of blood and fear and Royal Malaysian Army troops firing into shoplots.

Now that the Opposition coalition, Pakatan Harapan (PH) is going strong in many states after years of increased tax rates with little return, rising costs of living and a huge 1MDB scandal involving billions, Paris Hilton and Leonardo DiCaprio (yes, I’m not joking, please Google it), they are riding a wave of popular discontent and many people are keen on pushing the old government out. 

I have my own issues with PH regarding hypocrisy, failure, mismanagement and the deification of former BN strongman Mahathir - responsible for most of the sedition laws and crackdowns on journalism - as an icon, but rest assured that I want BN out like most of my countrymen. Also, these elections have shown un-subtle signs of tampering, like nomination dates released at the last minute, polling day set in the middle of the week, postal votes being disqualified for reasons not disclosed, etc. - it’s a dirty game and the referees are all corrupt as hell. 

My family and many other people have stocked up on food in the preceding weeks out of justified fear. We are hopeful, but we are also afraid. Wish us luck.
