An image of the Eleanor Cross in Geddington. The tallest and best of the three remaining Eleanor Crosses (from the original 12). The most famous is the now long gone Charing Cross that was demolished during the Civil War. The second shot is the more ghostly version of the Cross - i.e. too much photo editing.

Eleanor Cross, Geddingon, Northamptonshire, England. Another historic site I used to manage.

In 1290 Eleanor of Castile, the beloved wife of Edward I and mother of his 14 children, died at Harby in Nottinghamshire. The places where her body rested on the journey south to its tomb in Westminster Abbey were marked by stone crosses.

The stately triangular Geddington cross, with its canopied statues surmounted by a slender hexagonal pinnacle, is the best-preserved of only three intact survivors. Other crosses stand at Hardingstone near Northampton, and Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire.
