RIGHT it's like the point of the movie was that life is meaningless and people are shitty and maybe incest isn't as bad as you thought
aaaaahahahha that is probably the most accurate summary of the movie that i've seen so far
1/2 Hey penny for your thoughts -- do you think fandom (not just ours but all) has become overly sanitized? I'm all for people making their blog, their circle of peeps a safe space for their needs but this has turned into the trends of the more sensitive NO BE POSITIVE! DON'T SEND HATE, TAG EVERYTHING!!! It could just be me who has the benefit of not being sensitive or unduly bothered by most fandom content but it seems unfair and a little hypocritical to me. The delicate can have their say
2/2 and respectfully ask how people interact with them (which, cool) but the minute they observe any negative discussion anywhere there's a warcry about keeping the dreck out. What about the people that don't mind it, that don't see debate and disagreement and some liberal poo-flinging on the internet as a reason to stop the presses and mar their whole day. Like I personally think a certain ship should burn but I wholeheartedly reserve the right for them to think the same of me.
Okay, so, I mean, I'm not disagreeing with anything you're saying, and as usual, I find this to be a pretty complex question when analyzed on a macro scale.
In all honesty, yeah, sometimes I do get irritated with people on a whole for getting upset so easily about things because I too am not easily upset. My gut reaction is to roll my eyes and say, "Get over it. It's not a big deal."
I thought about your question for a long time though, and I ran a few thought experiments, and every conclusion I came to is that the right perspective is not up to me to decide, and every situation is different.
I believe everyone should take accountability for their emotions and actions. I believe over-externalizing is as damaging as over-internalizing. But I also believe that it is not up to me to determine if a given person is too sensitive or too brazen or too anything else. Everyone just is who they are, and everyone's emotions are valid emotions, whether they be caused by personal tragedy or media influence or nothing at all.
I believe in a balanced locus of control, but I also believe in compassion. The onus of action is on the person who is hurt to communicate their boundaries clearly.
That is not to say I take people's bullshit. In fact, I pride myself on my ability to call people out on it. If someone gripes at me for posting spoilers, that's not my fucking problem. If, however, someone following me has a legitimate trigger and would like me to tag said trigger a certain way so that they can avoid it, I would be happy to honor it.
In terms of things like pseudo-activism, though, I am much harsher. I get shit all the time on Sex 101 and DWIaGV and WwF from all manner of ridiculous social warriors, saying I should do this that and the other for my story to make it more in line with X plight.
I guess what I'm saying is that the issue here is that it's one thing to attack, and another to be attacked. It's an issue of passive v. active. If I post something, and I tag it clearly, and you rant at me about this that and the other of your beliefs and how I should be on board with whatever you think, then I will have no patience for you or your words. If, however, I do something that legitimately offends you or triggers you or upsets you personally, and you make me aware of it politely and respectfully, I have no reason to judge you for that.
This was kind of unorganized, but I was about to get into a thorough analysis of locus of control and evolutionary psychology, so I hope I made sense.
Hi! This is the english-learner anon. Thank you so much! I understand it better now and it makes so much more sense! Those were the best and simpler to understand explanation I've got! :)
I'm glad it helped! :D
