100. ”You’re my soulmate?!”

Hizan/Oliver, requested by @geekintrainingj. Thank you, and hope you enjoy!

Set during Telezine Crown where they first meet...Except it’s a soulmate AU!

The timer on her wrist had trickled down to a mere ten minutes. Hizan fidgeted, unable to tear her green eyes away from the numbers on her skin, suddenly finding it a little hard to breathe. This didn’t make any sense. She was waiting outside an abandoned castle, of all places, for Telezine and Leanne. There was nobody else here but her.  

She wasn’t ready to meet a soulmate. She had no bloody time for that. They were in the middle of a crisis. 

Besides, if Hizan was being honest with herself, she’d had been in love many times and it had always ended badly. She wasn’t sure if she was up for falling head over heels for somebody again.

One minute. Couldn’t she postpone it, somehow? Pretend it wasn’t happening? Who the hell would be out here this late, at this location?

“Alright, Hizan Sun?”

Hizan had the Golpixa pinned to the ground with her foot, panting from the exertion of their fight. This Oliver Slash was a tricky one, and she needed to get some proper answers out of him before he managed to run off. 

“Who sent--” she began roughly, only to stop. Her timer was at zero. She pressed her foot down harder into his chest, her throat dry. “Do me a favour and hold up your wrist, would you?” 

Oliver laughed, a sharp and scornful sound. “Get over yourself, darlin’. The universe wouldn’t be that much of a bitch.”

She showed him her timer, her eyes narrowed. “There’s nobody else here but you.” 

His laughter faded and he immediately tugged back his shirt sleeve. Zero. 

“Oh, for God’s sake,” Hizan snapped. This was absolutely typical. “You’re my soulmate? You? A bloody hitman?”

“I ain’t exactly thrilled about this either,” Oliver attempted. “Reckon you can let me stand up now, darlin’?”

“Don’t call me darling,” Hizan snarled. “Just because we’re apparently soulmates, it doesn’t mean we have to act on it.”

“You’re so right,” he said, shooting her a grin. It was charming, despite it all. “Green’s more my type anyway, to be honest. Not that you ain’t lovely to look at, ‘cause you definitely are.”

Hizan’s scowl deepened. “This is such a joke.”

Oliver grabbed her by the ankle, shoving her foot away from his chest. He got up, dusting his raggedy suit down, adjusting his tie. Sure, he was nice to look at. Incredibly attractive, if she was going to be honest. Not that it meant anything.

“So,” he began. “Hizan Sun. My soulmate.” 

She wanted to hate those words from his mouth. Part of her did. Part of her wanted him to keep talking. “Oliver Slash,” she retorted. “You’re under arrest.”

“I saved lion boy for you,” Oliver’s voice was laced with scorn. “I stuck by you fightin’ Mortios’ servants.” He tugged at his handcuffed arms bitterly from where they were locked on his chair. “You owe me big time, and what do I get as a thanks? I’m put back in bloody handcuffs.”

Hizan let him rant. She leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes, waiting for Telezine and Leanne. She had no idea what was happening; she’d been told to take Oliver to the Meeting Room, nothing else. 

“To be fair,” she began, “you tried to kidnap Leanne first.”

“You’re not still bitter about that, are you? Technically that was bloody ages ago, in the grand scheme of things. And look what I’ve done to make up for it.”

Hizan’s green eyes flickered open, and she looked at him properly. His tone and face gave nothing away, but his body language told her he was tense and exhausted. Just like she was. “You did help us,” she agreed. “And I am grateful.”

“Funny way of showin’ it, Red.” 

“You broke out of here before. You can do it again, easily, if you really wanted to.” 

He huffed indignantly. “Not with these damn handcuffs shuttin’ off my magic.”

Hizan stayed silent, her only response a raise of her eyebrow as she inspected her nails. “Mm.” 

Oliver paused, and then shot her a sharp grin, leaning forward. “Oh, Red,” he began, lowering his voice. “You’re the one that locked me in these.”

“I did, yeah,” she said. His voice really was intoxicating. She wondered if this was the last time she’d ever hear it. 

The grin only widened, showing off his perfect, white teeth. “Are you sure you followed your orders properly, darlin’?” 

“I’m not entirely sure,” she told him innocently. “Whisper did say handcuffs. She didn’t say what kind.”

He whistled lowly, his golden eyes boring into hers. “These aren’t shuttin’ off my magic, are they?” 

Hizan pressed a finger to her lips, and winked. He sat back in his chair, staring at her in nothing short of wonder. She wanted him to look at her like that again. “Now we’re even, Slash. We don’t owe each other anything.”

“Is that your way of sayin’ you want nothin’ more to do with me forever?” 

No. “It means we’re even,” she said. “So, thank you.”

The first skulduggery pleasant book years ago for Christmas. That series means so much to me. Also, tickets for me and @acemummerz to go to G4 for my 17th birthday!

✅ Something you’ve checked off your bucket list?

Ahh…I don’t really have a bucket list? I just try to take each day as it comes. Though I will say I’m very glad to have travelled to places I’ve always wanted to visit, like seeing the Grand Canyon.
