After he rescues Steve from the river, parts of Bucky start breaking through the Winter Soldier and he doesn’t go back to HYDRA. In an effort to remember who he is and what he meant to Steve and what Steve meant to him, he ends up at the Smithsonian. Eventually he makes his way back to Steve, breaking in to his house and waiting until Steve returns from his run.

He can tell Steve is surprised to see him standing in the middle of his living room when he returns, yet he moves slowly and cautiously as to not frighten Bucky off.

“Bucky?” He whispers, looking into Bucky’s eyes.

Bucky doesn’t know why he wore the mask, maybe in an effort to conceal his identity in case someone other than Steve was there, or in case he called for backup? Maybe to make himself feel more comfortable knowing that Steve can’t see the full expressions on his face or what he is feeling? He’s still trying to make sense of them himself.

Slowly he steps forward until he has Steve backed against a wall. He’s slightly taller than Steve with his boots on so he looks down at him.

Steve is looking at him with bated breath. Probably wondering if this is Bucky standing before him or the Winter Soldier.

Bucky reaches out and gently grabs Steve’s right hand with his metal one.

“Stevie?” He whispers, voice rough from the lack of use.

Steve shivers. “Do- do you remember?” He asks, hesitantly.

Bucky shakes his head.

He still doesn’t remember everything and he still feels his mind could betray him at any moment but he knows that the man in front of him is safe. He’s home. He’s his Stevie and that’s all that matters right now.

“Okay, okay, that’s okay. We can figure it out together. We’ll figure it. Just… please don’t leave me again,” he says, reaching up and cupping the back of Bucky’s neck with his free hand.

They’ll figure it out. Bucky knows they will, as long as Steve is with him, so he slowly nods and he can feel Steve relax against him.

My first real attempt at art with faces. Imma just leave it a sketch cause I know it’s only going to go downhill from here 😂

Also imagine Bucky disappeared only for a bit before coming to find Steve himself.
