Gem was bored. Look! Hermitland, while an absolutely wonderful place, had nothing but the same places, same things to do, and the same people, all the time. And maybe she was a dreamer, dreaming of exploring faraway lands, of discovering what was out there, of going on the adventure of a lifetime across the seven seas. Treasure hunting with her friends! What could possibly go wrong? She would come to regret those words when she got more adventure than she ever bargained for, discovering a giant kraken, ten meters tall, looming over her boat with the strength of a god, staring her down with the might of a thousand eyes. Well, Gem was never one to back down from a challenge, was she?

basically: gem centric au about sailing on a boat and discovering a kraken and maybe possibly getting a crush on it but u didn't hear that from me.

i finally finished posting chapters for the kraken dating guide! i will note that i don't think the story can be considered fully "finished," but i posted all the chapters that i had pre-written and the fic leaves off at the end of a story arc (so, it's not like.. a cliff-hanger? it's more like a "oh this could be expanded more" ending)

after abandoning this fic for 2 months bc of perfectionism, i am just. so glad to have it out there for people to read and enjoy? there's way more notes in the fic about what happened and why but ! it's out there now. i hope you'll give it a chance whether you've never heard of it or only read the first few chapters or anything else, bc i'm proud of it <3

grian and gem prank a poor, unsuspecting mumbo

When Gem hears the jingling of Mumbo’s keys and his fumbling with the lock on his front door, she doesn’t think. She grabs Grian and shoves him through the closest door she can see. It’s a cramped closet with the water heater but Mumbo has finally gotten the lock unstuck—Gem doesn’t have the time to wish for a better hiding space. She hurries in after Grian, pulling the door closed right as Mumbo pushes the front door open.
