I’m having a difficult time putting this into words, so I apologize if it doesn’t come across clearly, but

I’ve been having a hard time this Pride Season with the slogan “Love is Love”. I 100% believe in the message behind it, regarding acceptance of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and pansexual (etc) identities. And I feel that it completely erases the struggle toward equality for transgender folks, as well as aromantic people.

Trans and aromantic people belong in and at Pride as well. Watering down the message of Pride to a catchy slogan like “love is love” implies that the most important part of people’s identity is their attraction. Yes, it is so so important for everyone to be accepted, no matter who they love. But it is imperative that we begin to send the message that people are important on their own.

We need our community, true. And we need to remember that everyone, every single person, has value on their own, outside of their relationships with other people.

Love is love. Human is human. We are all deserving of respect and pride, whether in a relationship, or outside of one.
