“The Story of X” by Lois Gould discusses a lot of issues that we have talked about in class regarding sex versus gender, especially involving children who are too young to understand or interpret their own sex or gender. In the case of child X, the parents undergo an experimental decision to raise their child gender neutral, which caused an uproar in the school community. This reaction is common I think to what is received in society when people take this unconventional route regarding gender, but it should be perhaps considered more, so that when a child grows up and is old enough to make their own decisions, they can make their own decisions about which gender they wish to identify with. I do wonder, however, is this possible to raise a child truly gender neutral with all the outside influences like school, friends and other families?

Sooo tired of all those dang tumblr kids making up words all the time like “cisgender heterosexual man, he/him pronouns” to seem more special and unique. Stop inventintg genders that aren’t real!! Conversation with work colleague after coming out.

I’m sorry but I still see “birth name” (well yes, you will. I won’t grow a beard, sound like Barry White and pack on 10kg of muscle overnight).

I think you should take out your earrings (ah men wear earrings and it’s not like they are giant hoops I’m sporting. They’re spacers).

And change your glasses (These are male frames! Plus the majority of glasses aren’t gendered).

Because you don’t want people to walk past you and say “Is that a boy or a girl”, you know? (Yes. Yes I do know. Because I’ve been battling gender binary traditionalist like you for years. And it’s because of your gender policing, that non-binary and genderqueer people struggle everyday to survive. Thank you for your concern but this isn’t a lunchroom conversation I want to partake in. Nor do I appreciate your fashion advice because I’m feeling dapper as fuck right now.)

 I NEED TO RANT FOR A SECOND

Today I was at work and this lady came up to check out with her adorable baby in his little seat. I asked her if I could say hi because babies are cute and I work at the dollar store so lets be honest this is the most exciting thing about my day. Anyway I walk over and start talking to the baby and making funny faces at him, which causes him to giggle and HIS FUCKING MOM to say “ I swear he is such a flirt! He’s going to be a total lady killer when he grows up.” 

Being an education major I have so many problems with this that I need to break it down via internet rant if only for my own sake. So lets start with the fundamentals and work our way up, shall we?:

1. This child is four months old. This means he cant even fully distinguish shapes or process anything further than a foot away from his face.  At this age, people look only slightly more interesting than colors.

2.  THIS CHILD IS FOUR MONTHS OLD. He has no idea what a girl is or that he is expected to like them because society has deemed being straight as the “norm”. He doesn't even know that he exists yet. At this stage in their development, babies do not yet have object permanence. This means that when something disappears from their field of vision, THEY THINK IT HAS CEASED TO EXIST.

3. THIS CHILD IS FOUR FUCKING MONTHS OUT OF THE WOMB. Why are you thinking about your child in that manner?!
