I love having immigrant parents because they don’t know societal gender norms in America at all.
Today we went out to eat (socially distanced w masks when applicable) and without a second thought my dad buys a really sweet drink and my mom buys a sweet drink too. When the waiter came to the table he was like “I don’t know who ordered which” because y’know usually people associate sweet drinks with women, but he couldn’t play that game this time so he set the two drinks between my parents. My parents were oblivious to the implications and idea that men shouldn’t drink sweet drinks and just went about their night. Both enjoyed their drinks very much.
I just like moments like that. I like how my parents in some ways don’t conform to gender roles whatsoever. I like how my dad does the dishes every night, and my mom makes the bigger paycheck around here. I like that my dad always waits for my mom to eat dinner because even though he has a 9-5 job my mom’s schedule changes every day and she could come home late.
It’s just little things that make me smile. I’m glad my dad shamelessly enjoys sweet alcoholic drinks because he hates the bitterness of alcohol, and I like that my mom doesn’t make fun of that.
