Listening
Listen Up! When I started in the field, listening was the last thing I thought I needed to improve yet I learned quickly that it is THE most important part of the process! It’s the invisible super power we have that informs our work. If you have taken one of my advanced lettering courses, you have heard me talk about the “Speeds of Lettering” and it’s relationship with the speed of everything else we do. Listening is the FASTEST thing we do after thinking.
Now, while I don’t teach listening, I highly recommend three professionals in our field and their listening models:
Sophia Liang who presented her model in Listen, Letter, Draw Together
Kelvy Bird and her work in Generative Scribing
Brandy Agerbeck and her upcoming workshop Visual Listening
Brandy will teach you the 10 Listening Keys in language that signal exactly how what you hear fits into the big picture you are drawing.
I recently met with Brandy and we talked about her listening model and I shared how it supported my intuitive way of listening by using the Keys for what I call anticipatory listening. They help guide my compositions when graphic recording and listen to where the conversation wants to go when facilitating. IMPORTANT: You can register today, June 1 to get your workshop kit in time. June 10 is your last day to register for the June 12 live workshop. In addition to listening, if you are starting out in this field, I recommend studying with the masters, those who have extensive experience in the field, and know how and what to teach according to what is needed to bring value to clients. You have seen me recommend teachers over the years because I made it a point to learn from the best in our field. This is the first time I get to recommend a teammate who I had the pleasure of working with while on the Visioneering Team in Washington, DC.
When I first met Lauren (aka @DancingWithMarkers), I wanted to be like her in many ways. She has it all: organizational development, facilitation, visual skills, and the street cred to back it all up. I’ve seen her thrive in the toughest of situations and I know the generous personal side of her too. With all of the courses offered online that I recommend, Lauren just entered the scene with her Introduction to Facilitating with Visuals. You can get $50 off by using the coupon code PRESALE.
