I’d say that I can slip into the role of a character, sure.. empathize with, fantasize about, sometimes pretend as them - who doesn’t? - but I wouldn’t say I fantasize about being any of them permanently? (Maybe except Apollyna the fuban, because come on, Nothing-Bad-Ever-Happens Imagination-Planet full of colorful friends?? sounds great)

Where does flitting between worlds and personalities like I’m playing Identity Bingo fall on this spectrum?

Anyway, to be more direct, I’d probably say I’m more detached solely on the basis that I’d rather play Observer than wish I were actually a part of any the situations I put my characters in.

🎇 14. When writing for specific characters, is there anything you have to do to get into the right mindset?

Funny enough, I’d say this question should be flipped around. I have to settle into characters that fit my current mindset or interest - which would explain my blog’s frantic switching between them all!

I’m a slave to my whims, which is to say I apparently have little control over what I’m currently Into and wanting to express. Once I do slip into a new obsessive phase, though, I suppose I do all the normal things like listening to music that reminds me of the characters/world, researching various aspects of their backgrounds or personalities, etc.

Development is an extremely protracted process for me due to ths, lol.

🏆 19. What’s more important to you: visual design, unique personality, a trendy character aesthetic, etc? If you’re not sure, then what’s the first thing you usually nail down in a character?

I suppose, primarily as an artist and not a writer, visual design is a huge component of the process and is definitely the first thing I come up with. To me, without even a super vague physical/visual description, its almost like there is no character. “what do you mean you don’t know what they look like?”

A very vague combination of visual design (colors and shapes), a handful of personality descriptors and a role are uuuusually simultaneously thought of; after all, what the heck do I have with only one or the other? I can slowly build from there by sorting them into a world, adding interests, relationships, history, etc. That’s probably pretty normal.

a couple existing examples because it’s kinda fun:

• the seeds for Anthony the vampire were “short and chubby dork, passive, awkward, classical monster in a xenophobic world where their existence is known and heavily regulated”

• something as simple as “two of Tgr’ek’s girlfriends: one’s a willowy jellyfish alien, the other looks like a voluptuous black/iridescent Gossamer from Looney Toons”

•an entire world spawned from a single facial expression (#the-look inspired Katt, and Terra Felis aka “CAT WORLD” sprung up around him)

Did you upload arins backstory? if so you got a link?

well since he’s a character in the comic im trying to develop i kinda leave some things to be revealed when the comic actually comes out character wise as to avoid spoilers and things, but arin is a more minor character who might actually be tweaked a little bit later on

buuut most of his backstory doesn’t have anything to do with the main story so i can sum it up and put it under a read more just in case it makes this post too long 

sooo yeah basically arin was a robot made by an artist for some sort of social experiment of sorts. the artist made him in collaboration with a few friends, where the artist did his design while the others actually made him tick, y’know? the artist lady wanted to make something that would really piss some people off because he would be in the body of a she/look like a she. his body was to be modeled after the “perfect shape” for a girl at the time. that means a small waist, big breasts, big hips, tiny feet, etc. buut they gave him the face of a handsome young man. two pretty things put together in a way that’s perceived as wrong or freakish. arin was supposed to represent many things: sexualization of women, breaking gender norms, showing that’s okay to be considered “imperfect” and that you don’t need to change for anybody. they made him to be a musician so that he could stand as a symbol or an idol for any people out there struggling with the problems he represented. he was donated to a music lounge that the artist’s grandparents owned and that’s where his rise to fame started!

it was kinda tough for him at first because his fame started out with a whole lot of hate. he rarely got a physical confrontation but he got a lot of, ahem, “fanmail” with a manner of colorful speech. but, arin did get letters of support and love among the rest, and those kept him going. the hate he got made word about him spread, and more and more people came to the lounge to hear his music. more robots were donated to the lounge as musicians, and they were arin’s first and best friends. he found himself in a really good spot because of all the little people who gave him support, and that gave him a real confidence boost that turned him into exactly what his creator intended to be. he still gets the occasional bully, but he’s not bothered by them anymore. yaaaay happy endings!

(of course that’s just his backstory though)
