the case of genie wiley is so fucking sad, the fact that in the clips of her speaking after she was found by social services, she was actually learning, you could see how desperate she was for knowledge and she was thriving, but then she got broken so quickly and so badly again that she ended up in the same state as she was in that dark room. She could've been happy and done so much, but they treated her like an experiment instead of a human being. I hope her dad rots in hell

I’ve been looking into Genie Wiley after watching Mockingbirds can’t sing, all I see with this case is both a family and society failing to help a hurt child that is now stuck somewhere we will never know because the info on her has gotten cold for a long time to the point that we’re not even sure if she’s still alive or not. This is the stuff makes me look out into the world as ask why? Why do we let these things happen, why do we abandon people who need genuine help and still live with no regret or care about it. How do people live like that?! What fucked you up to make you not care about a human who has suffered from one of the worst cases of abuse in history, what kind of monster are you to leave someone like that to rot?!

ABUSED CHILD

            Genie Wiley was an American child who was severely abused by her father Clark through neglect, isolation, violence, and possible assault.

            Genie was the youngest of four children, her mother Dorothy had medical problems, poor eye sight, and was abused by her husband. Clark hated children and kept Wiley in a locked bedroom, strapped to a toilet, kept her isolated away from other people, had no toys or stimulation, and wasn’t permitted to make any noise. The family couldn’t watch television or listen to the radio. Genie and her Dorothy weren’t permitted to leave the house, and only her older brother was permitted to go to school. He ran away from home when he turned 18.

            Dorothy had an argument with Clive and left and took Genie with her. A social worker was concerned for Genie and police were notified who then arrested her parents. The day before he was to appear in court, Clive took his own life and the charges against Dorothy were dropped.

            Aged 13, Genie was studied by doctors, scientists and psychologists. She lived with numerous people, including her mother who decided she could not care for her. Genie was then sent to live in an institution for disabled people and could speak very little. Her mother died in 2003 and her brother passed away in 2011.

I hate how people romanticize Genie Wiley. She was a girl abused to the point of complete disability who was eventually left to rot in state homes and completely regressed because the scientists in charge of her got into an unethical custody battle over her. She never healed, she was used up as a test subject and then abandoned. She’s a perfect example of how nobody wants to deal with disabled adults even if they pat themselves on the back for tolerating a disabled child. We’re not supposed to grow up, we’re supposed to just become the romantic ghost of our child selves when we aren’t cute anymore. I know a disabled man who is planning to end his life when his mom dies to avoid spending the rest of his life in homes and honestly I don’t blame him. She was abused further in foster care and as of the last reports of her she was put away in an adult home in California. She’s not a “Feral Child” or “Wild Girl” she’s a victim of unspeakable abuse (which was prompted by her fathers belief that she was disabled). She’s a tragic victim of ableism not your aesthetic
